Discover Your Career at Emory University

Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our academic community.

Description

  • The Zarnitsyna lab in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Emory University School of Medicine is recruiting for a new multidisciplinary project on respiratory virus transmission. The project combines video-recorded ferret transmission experiments with machine learning–based behavioral tracking and mechanistic mathematical modeling to determine how contact behavior, contact duration, fomite sharing, and viral shedding together shape infection risk. The long-term goal is to translate this framework to human challenge studies and household cohorts to inform evidence-based mitigation strategies. This position focuses specifically on the mathematical modeling component: building and fitting mechanistic models that link the behavioral tracking data to infection outcomes and viral dynamics.

  • The Zarnitsyna lab seeks a Lead Research Specialist to support a project on respiratory virus transmission that combines ferret behavioral data with mathematical modeling. Working under the supervision of Dr. Zarnitsyna, the candidate will implement and fit mechanistic models of influenza transmission, run simulations, and estimate model parameters from behavioral tracking data, infection outcomes, and viral load measurements. The candidate will also maintain documentation and quality standards for data and code, train others in relevant tools, and contribute to publications and presentations. The position can start immediately. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact the principal investigator with a CV and a brief statement of research interests.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques.
  • May assist in protocol design.
  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.
  • Analyzes and interprets results of studies.
  • Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.
  • Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.
  • Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.
  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Develops mechanistic mathematical models of infectious disease dynamics and transmission.
  • Performs computational simulations and quantitative analyses using R, Python, or Julia.
  • Collaborates with experimental and computational research groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Programming experience in R, Julia, or Python, writing reproducible analysis code.

  • The ability to work independently on a collaborative, multidisciplinary project.
