Job title: Lead Organizer (Southern California)
About the Role Lead Organizer based out of Los Angeles, reporting to the Organizing Director, to support unions and central labor councils across California in organizing, bargaining, legislative, and political campaigns. The role focuses on coordinating training, mobilization, and field programs, and building power for workers by strengthening affiliate and council capacity.
What You'll Do
- Provide coordination, training, and mobilization support to affiliates and central labor councils on statewide and regional organizing campaigns, contract campaigns, political campaigns, local actions, and initiatives.
- Track and respond to affiliates’ needs on contract fights, strikes, organizing, and political campaigns; identify opportunities to provide resources and support.
- Attend labor councils’ delegate meetings, provide updates from the Federation, and report back.
- Develop content, help plan and facilitate Federation-sponsored trainings, campaign academies, convenings, and meetings targeted to workers, unions, staff, central labor councils, and others.
- Help the organizing team coordinate with AFL-CIO on national campaigns and initiatives.
- Monitor and respond to organizing leads, and coordinate with appropriate affiliate unions.
- Support the Federation’s political mobilization programs by supporting central labor councils and unions on implementation of field programs, including canvassing, worksite education and outreach, phone banks, direct mail, member communications, volunteer recruitment, GOTV, and other events and actions.
- Coordinate voter file data to reach union voters using the PDI system including creating universes, setting up online phone banks/canvassing projects and requesting electronic files through the AFL-CIO process.
- Help manage the AFL-CIO approval process for use of member data.
- Lead, run, and assist other labor councils with virtual phone banks using CallEvo.
- Work with central labor councils and local unions to support member-to-member voter outreach programs on PDI or other programs as needed.
- Provide support to unions with members who are out of work due to strikes, displacement, business closures, layoffs, etc.
- Provide staffing support to the Federation’s leaders in the field.
- Provide staffing support and help with planning and mobilizing turnout for the Federation’s annual conferences, events, and convenings.
What We're Looking For
- Experience as a union organizer in internal and external organizing campaigns in public and/or private sectors.
- Prior experience leading and facilitating trainings for unions strongly preferred.
- Flexibility to work with a range of different organizing frameworks, models, and methods.
- Prior experience with worksite programs, volunteer training and mobilization.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong ability to speak publicly and clearly present information to groups.
- Demonstrated success working in fast-paced environments – both individually and collaborating as part of a team.
- Ability to take initiative, identify new opportunities to engage and add value to central labor councils and affiliate programs, and balance short and long-term projects and time-sensitive assignments.
- Strong ability to adapt to changing circumstances, anticipate problems and demonstrate resourcefulness in identifying solutions.
- Bilingual (written and verbal) English/Spanish candidates preferred.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $75,000–$103,269 per year, dependent on relevant experience.
