About this role

Lead Java Developer - Vice President

As a Lead Java Engineer on Citi's distributed calculation platform, you will design and build the software that drives 500 million risk and suitability calculations every single day. You will work on a system that coordinates hundreds of thousands of pods, tens of thousands of compute cores and hundreds of terabytes of memory, partnering closely with software engineers, DevOps teams and customers to keep it fast, secure and reliable. Beyond the code, you will mentor engineers and help shape the long-term direction of one of Citi's most demanding engineering platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build Java-based software that powers a high-performance calculation engine processing hundreds of millions of distributed calculations every day.

  • Develop new platform features without slowing down a system where small inefficiencies are multiplied across millions of calculations.

  • Solve complex distributed computing problems, such as moving small amounts of data efficiently across huge numbers of machines.

  • Lead improvements to the CI/CD pipeline that enable frequent, reliable software releases for a SaaS platform.

  • Build an API that gives customers controlled access to configure how the platform runs for their own use cases.

  • Create new testing mechanisms that support rapid, dependable releases across a daily microservice deployment cycle.

  • Mentor and coach engineers through code reviews, technical guidance and career development support.

  • Partner directly with customers to resolve issues and optimize large-scale distributed workloads.

  • Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience with Java.

  • Experience building and improving CI/CD pipelines using DevOps practices.

  • Practical experience with Java frameworks such as Spring, Spring Boot or Quarkus.

  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms, including AWS, Azure or GCP, and containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Experience designing, building and maintaining large-scale distributed systems and RESTful APIs.

  • Solid command of object-oriented programming, design patterns and test automation using frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito.

  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.

  • Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior experience operating as a lead engineer, though strong individual contributors are equally encouraged to apply.

  • Exposure to NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Cassandra.

  • Familiarity setting up testing frameworks such as Cucumber.

  • Take on technical ownership and help shape the long-term direction of a platform used across Citi.
  • Access structured learning and development opportunities to deepen your expertise in distributed systems and cloud engineering.
  • Collaborate with engineering and DevOps teams across multiple regions on a platform operating at global scale.
  • Benefit from wellbeing, financial planning and family support programs designed to support your life outside of work.
