Lead Enterprise Data Engineering/Data Platform Architect

As a member of the Enterprise Systems team, the Lead Enterprise Data Engineer is responsible to lead development, deployment, configuration, customization, maintenance, support, and monitoring of the Taylor University data ecosystem and integrations, including both hosted and cloud-based systems. The position is responsible for optimizing and maintaining data systems to ensure maximum efficiency and performance and collaborates with stakeholders to identify effective ways to leverage data in support of Taylor University business objectives and requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is primarily responsible to:

  • Testify to personal experience of salvation in Jesus Christ, affirm belief in the University’s Statement of Faith, abide by and practice our Life Together Covenant, and both personally agree with and support the Foundational Documents of Taylor University.
  • Lead analysis and design of the enterprise data systems, including the Extract-Transfer-Load (ETL) process, Operation Data Store (ODS), and Data warehouse/data marts.
  • Leverage APIs to support secure and efficient data movement between systems, cloud platforms, and reporting environments, while identifying new opportunities to streamline business processes.
  • Oversee data migration initiatives, including moving on-premises data platforms and pipelines to cloud-based environments.
  • Provide enterprise leadership as the principal internal expert on Microsoft Fabric and connected data technologies, partnering with external technology vendors to lead the migration of SQL Server objects and data structures into Fabric while building internal expertise to support ongoing operations and long-term success.
  • Establish and sustain trusted, well-governed data products that prepare institutional data for advanced analytics and approved AI use cases, including predictive analytics, student success tools, prospect models, and leadership reporting.
  • Design and build SQL data objects, views, marts, and semantic structures that facilitate accurate and efficient reporting, business intelligence and dashboard development. Ensure data integrity, quality, consistency, security, and governance across data ecosystem and reporting environments.
  • Evaluate emerging tools, technologies, and best practices related to cloud data platforms, ETL, and enterprise reporting.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to understand business requirements and translate them into effective data designs and technical solutions. Work closely with the ERP DBA and Salesforce architect to ensure both platform investments are fully leveraged to support downstream reporting and decision-making.
  • Collaborate with team members on best practice protocols for development and maintenance of data exports for vendor partners.
  • Document data platform processes and workflows for knowledge sharing and future references.
  • Maintain a data test environment and testing procedures
  • Respond to after-hour situations involving systems requiring urgent or immediate resolution.
  • React productively to change and perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience (2+ years) as a database administrator or data analyst.
  • In depth knowledge and experience in SQL development is required.

Preferred:

  • Experience or training in system administration, database administration and programming.
  • Recent experience with current applications technologies including Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Fabric, PowerBI, Microsoft Data Factory.
  • Data Warehousing experience and proficiency in ETL is a plus.
  • Detail-oriented, process-driven, systemic thinker with experience in data automation.
  • Team-oriented, yet able to work independently.
  • Excellent problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • This position has the possibility to follow a hybrid work model, combining on-premises work with opportunities for remote work based on business needs, project requirements, and supervisor approval.
