About Ankra Health

Ankra Health is an early-stage health technology company and Public Benefit Corporation engineering simulation-backed predictive platforms for human metabolic optimization. We are bridging the gap between static wellness tracking and reactive clinical care by building software that translates continuous biometric telemetry and laboratory data into prospective, physiological decision models. Supported by regional health system accelerators and backed by non-dilutive federal R&D funding initiatives (NSF SBIR Phase I), we are assembling a team of deep-tech engineers, computer scientists, and applied mathematicians to solve high-dimensional biological filtering and causal inference problems.

Role OverviewWe are seeking a State-Space Systems Specialist (Control Engineer) specializing in non-linear state estimation and dynamic systems modeling to architect the mechanistic core of our physiological digital twin. In this role, you will lead the mathematical stabilization and continuous-time state estimation engine, fusing deterministic differential equations of human metabolic kinetics with non-parametric machine learning residuals.

This position is structured as a Contingent Key Hire. You will collaborate with the founders to finalize technical specifications for our pending award submission. Upon award activation, you will step into a funded 6-month key engineering role (~20 hours/week) with a direct pathway to equity and a full-time Lead Systems Engineer / Chief Scientist position as we scale into Phase II clinical trials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Dynamic State Estimation Engine: Design, implement, and validate continuous-discrete Unscented Kalman Filters (UKF), Extended Kalman Filters (EKF), or Particle Filters to dynamically assimilate asynchronous laboratory panels and high-frequency biometric telemetry into latent physiological state vectors.

  • Hybrid Mechanistic-ML Modeling: Couple deterministic ODE/SDE systems representing physiological conservation laws (e.g., minimal glucose-insulin kinetics, hepatic lipid transport, systemic inflammatory markers) with non-parametric machine learning residuals (Gaussian Processes / BART).

  • Filter Stabilization & Boundary Projection: Mathematically stabilize the state-space engine, implementing bounded residual projection matrices to prevent filter divergence, covariance collapse, or the generation of unphysiological state trajectories.

  • Biological Drift Detection: Build automated real-time drift-detection algorithms utilizing Page-Hinkley residual monitoring to identify acute physiological shifts (e.g., inflammatory spikes, medication changes) and trigger state re-calibration.

  • Interference & Middleware Integration: Collaborate with our software engineering team to wrap state-space algorithms into containerized Python microservices interfacing with our relational database schema and causal inference layer.

  • Required Qualifications

  • PhD or Master’s Degree in Control Systems Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or a closely related computational field.

  • Non-Linear Filtering & State-Space Mastery: Demonstrated expertise in stochastic differential equations, non-linear filtering techniques (UKF, EnKF, Particle Filtering), and dynamic state estimation.

  • Mathematical Programming: Advanced proficiency in Python utilizing scientific and computational libraries (NumPy, SciPy, JAX, PyTorch, or PyMC) to write clean, vectorized production code.

  • Federal Regulatory Compliance: U.S. work authorization and physical residence within the United States (a strict requirement for federal grant eligibility).

  • Preferred / Bonus Qualifications

  • Background or research experience modeling physiological systems, biophysical kinetics, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), or systems biology.

  • Familiarity with Bayesian statistics, probabilistic graphical modeling, or Causal Inference frameworks (Structural Causal Models / Directed Acyclic Graphs).

  • Experience packaging state-space algorithms inside Docker containers or microservice environments on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

  • Engagement Structure

  • Phase 1 (Pre-Award / Current): Short screening interview, technical review, and signing a formal Letter of Commitment to be named as Key Personnel on our pending federal grant proposal.

  • Phase 2 (Grant Performance Period): Fully funded part-time key hire role (~20 hours/week over 6 months) to execute the control systems build and state-space filtering layer.

  • Phase 3 (Post-Phase I Scale): Transition opportunity into a full-time Lead Control Systems Engineer / VP of Systems Engineering role upon Phase II commercial rollout.
