LEAD ACCOUNTANT Finance, Audit, Cost Control & Management Reporting

The Lead Accountant will take hands-on responsibility for the company’s accounting, financial control, revenue assurance, management reporting, budgeting, audit coordination, taxation, inventory accounting and operational cost analysis.

The successful candidate must be a professionally qualified accountant with strong experience in finance and audit, as well as practical exposure to manufacturing or cost-accounting environments and transport or logistics operations. The role requires much more than routine bookkeeping. The candidate must be capable of identifying revenue leakages, controlling costs, reconciling complex transactions and providing management with accurate information for business decisions.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or HND in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related discipline. Professional qualification as an ACA, ACCA, ANAN or equivalent recognized accountant is required. Training in internal audit, taxation, financial modelling, cost accounting or forensic accounting will be an advantage. Good knowledge of applicable financial-reporting standards and Nigerian statutory requirements. Advanced competence in Microsoft Excel and recognized accounting or ERP software is required.

  • Experience/Skills

  • Minimum of eight years’ progressive accounting, finance or audit experience. At least three years’ experience in a senior accounting, finance-management, audit or financial-control position. Strong professional background in financial accounting, management accounting and internal control. Practical external or internal audit experience, preferably from an audit firm or structured corporate audit environment. Experience in manufacturing, engineering or another cost-intensive operation involving inventory, job costing, consumption analysis and variance reporting. Experience in passenger transport, logistics, fleet operations or a multi-location service business is strongly preferred. Ability to prepare complete monthly management accounts, cash-flow reports, budgets, forecasts and performance analyses. Strong bank, payment-gateway, POS, booking-system, cash and intercompany reconciliation skills. Practical knowledge of route, trip, vehicle and terminal profitability analysis. Ability to account for fuel, lubricants, tyres, spare parts, workshop materials and other fleet-operating costs. Strong knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, fixed assets and inventory control. Experience coordinating statutory audits, tax filings and regulatory compliance. Ability to investigate financial discrepancies, suspicious transactions and possible revenue leakages. Strong leadership, analytical, communication and report-writing skills.

  • Must be a hands-on accountant capable of personally reviewing ledgers, reconciliations, schedules and supporting documents. Must be able to establish and enforce strong financial controls across terminals, workshops, stores and administrative locations. Must understand the relationship between operations, vehicle utilization, passenger volume, revenue, fuel consumption and profitability. Must be capable of applying manufacturing-style cost-control principles to fleet maintenance, workshop jobs, inventory usage and vehicle operating costs. Must demonstrate a high level of integrity, confidentiality and professional independence. Must not authorize, conceal or regularize unsupported payments, expenses or accounting entries. Must be firm enough to challenge discrepancies and insist on adequate supporting documentation. Must be able to work with booking systems, business-intelligence dashboards and large transaction datasets. Must be willing to visit terminals, workshops, stores and other operating locations for verification and control purposes. Must be able to meet strict daily, weekly, monthly and statutory reporting deadlines. Must be willing to undergo background checks, reference verification and a practical accounting assessment.

  • Responsibilities & Context

  • Lead the company’s accounting and finance functions and supervise assigned accounts personnel. Maintain complete, accurate and current books of account. Establish and enforce appropriate accounting policies, approval procedures and financial controls. Ensure that all financial transactions are properly authorized, supported, classified and recorded. Prepare accurate monthly management accounts, including income statements, balance sheets, cash-flow reports and supporting schedules. Produce daily, weekly and monthly financial-performance reports for management. Reconcile revenue recorded in the booking system with cash, bank transfers, POS receipts, payment gateways and terminal returns. Ensure that all passenger and cargo revenue is completely captured and paid into approved company accounts. Investigate missing revenue, duplicate transactions, forged tickets, unauthorized discounts, unapproved refunds and other booking irregularities. Reconcile terminal collections, online bookings, agent transactions and other revenue channels. Work with IT, Audit and Operations to investigate suspicious transactions and system exceptions. Prepare route, terminal, vehicle and trip profitability reports. Analyse passenger revenue, cargo revenue, seat occupancy, fuel consumption, driver costs, terminal expenses and other trip-related costs. Identify loss-making routes, vehicles or terminals and recommend corrective financial measures. Develop budgets and forecasts in consultation with management and departmental heads. Monitor actual performance against approved budgets and explain significant variances. Prepare cash-flow forecasts and advise management on liquidity requirements and payment priorities. Monitor bank balances, loans, repayment obligations, finance costs and other funding arrangements. Maintain accurate records of foreign-currency transactions, exchange rates, remittances and supplier payments. Account separately and accurately for personal, shareholder, related-party and company-funded transactions. Maintain complete accounts-payable records and verify supplier invoices before payment. Ensure that procurement documents, delivery records, store receipts and payment requests agree before processing. Maintain accounts-receivable records and follow up outstanding debts. Review payroll inputs, attendance records, allowances, deductions and employee-status changes before payroll processing. Ensure that disengaged, suspended, absent or unauthorized employees are not improperly paid. Maintain accurate records of statutory deductions, taxes, pensions and other approved employee obligations. Maintain the fixed-asset register and coordinate periodic physical verification of vehicles, equipment, buildings and other assets. Ensure proper accounting for vehicle acquisition, depreciation, repairs, refurbishment and disposal. Establish cost controls for fuel, lubricants, tyres, spare parts and workshop materials. Reconcile store records with purchases, issues, job cards and physical stock. Apply job-costing principles to major repairs, engine rebuilding, accident repairs and other workshop activities. Identify abnormal consumption, inventory shortages, repeated part replacements and unexplained workshop costs. Coordinate periodic inventory counts and investigate stock differences. Review imprests, advances, staff accounts and retirement of expenses. Ensure no new advance is issued where previous advances remain unretired without authorization. Prepare schedules and supporting records for external auditors, tax consultants, banks and regulators. Coordinate annual statutory audits and ensure timely resolution of audit queries.
