Job title: Lactation Specialist and Childbirth Educator
About the Role
The Lactation Specialist and Childbirth Educator provides lactation support for mother-infant pairs and leads childbirth education programs. The role combines direct lactation care with scheduling and teaching childbirth classes, and may require working at alternate sites to grow the service.
What You'll Do
- Assess patients’ lactation needs using age-appropriate data; develop care plans, implement interventions, and evaluate outcomes.
- Educate mothers on correct breastfeeding techniques, troubleshooting latch issues, maintaining milk supply, and tips for first feeds.
- Schedule and teach childbirth education classes; assist the Director in growing the childbirth education service.
- Collaborate with Nursing Director, Clinical Supervisor or Nurse Manager to coordinate care; may work at alternate sites.
- Demonstrate compliance with Code of Conduct and institutional policies; maintain a safe, respectful, and evidence-based practice environment.
What We're Looking For
- Education: Required – Associate’s degree or successful completion of an accredited Lactation Education program; Preferred – Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
- Licensure/Certification: Required – International Board Certified Lactation Consultant or Certified Childbirth Educator with completion of IBCLC within one year of hire; American Heart Association BLS. Preferred – Neonatal Resuscitation Provider certification from AHA and American Academy of Pediatrics.
- Experience: Required – One year of experience in lactation and childbirth education.
- Skills/Abilities: Ability to independently manage multiple priorities; compassionate and non-judgmental caregiver and advocate; comprehensive knowledge of reproductive health, pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, breastfeeding, infant development and infant care; strong communication and interpersonal skills; learner-centered teaching strategies; experience with evidence-based curricula.
Nice to Have
- NRP certification (preferred) and ongoing engagement in evidence-based lactation practices.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $32.12 - $48.79 per hour.
- Full-time position with 40 hours per week; typical shift 8 hours; onsite role at Eisenhower Medical Center.
