About the Role Under general supervision, the Laboratory Scientist performs waived, moderate or high complexity laboratory testing to support diagnosis and treatment. The role includes instrument maintenance, quality control, regulatory readiness, and may oversee waived point-of-care testing; duties may vary by site. What You'll Do
- Perform/results and document clinical laboratory testing exercising independent judgment and responsibility.
- Note abnormal patient results and informs supervisor, pathologist, or principal investigator as appropriate.
- Operate laboratory equipment, interfaces and instruments, and perform and document basic maintenance procedures.
- Perform routine logging for QC/QA purposes; collect and compile QA data; monitor QC for trends and take corrective action as directed.
- Troubleshoot procedures, identify testing problems and recommend appropriate solutions using defined guidelines.
- Actively participate in regulatory inspections.
- Take inventory as needed or appropriate; order supplies for the Section/Department as directed.
- Assist with training of new staff and/or students.
- Serve as a liaison with internal and external customers/employees/clients.
- Depending on site/department, may participate in the POCT oversight program including training staff in waived testing, troubleshooting IT connectivity issues, reviewing quality performance, and validating waived testing.
- Depending on site/department, may collect specimens such as blood, urine, sputum and other body fluids and prepare for analysis. What We're Looking For
- CLIA-based qualifications for Laboratory Scientist levels I–IV with multiple acceptable degree/experience combinations (Bachelor’s or Associate’s in biological/chemical science, clinical laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology, or equivalent training).
- Lab Scientist I: no experience required; various degree options as outlined in CLIA guidance.
- Lab Scientist II: Bachelor’s in clinical laboratory science/medical technology or biology/chemistry with 0–2 years of direct clinical laboratory experience, or equivalent Associate degree with 0–2 years of experience; other CLIA-acceptable pathways also described (e.g., pre-1992 technologist qualification).
- Lab Scientist III: typically two years of experience as Scientist II or a Bachelor’s degree in biology/chemistry with four years of direct clinical laboratory experience, or equivalent CLIA pathways.
- Additional qualifications may include experience with waived POCT and readiness for regulatory inspections.
