Job title: Laboratory Scientist
About the Role Under general supervision, performs waived, moderate or high complexity laboratory tests for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, maintains and troubleshoots equipment, and supports QC/QA activities. May assist with waived point of care testing and acts as a liaison with internal and external customers; staff are eligible for designation as Testing Personnel for moderate/high complexity testing under CLIA regulations.
What You'll Do
- Performs/results and documents clinical laboratory testing exercising independent judgment and responsibility.
- Notes abnormal patient results and informs supervisor, pathologist, or principal investigator as appropriate.
- Operates laboratory equipment, interfaces and instruments, performs and documents basic maintenance procedures.
- Performs routine logging for QC/QA purposes; collects and compiles QA data as directed; monitors QC for trends and documents corrective actions as needed.
- Performs troubleshooting procedures; identifies testing problems and recommends appropriate solutions using defined guidelines.
- Actively participates in regulatory inspections.
- Takes inventory as needed or appropriate; orders supplies for the Section/Department as directed.
- Assists with training of new staff and/or students.
- Serves as a liaison with internal and external customers/employees/clients.
- Depending on site/department, may participate in the POCT oversight program (training, troubleshooting IT connectivity, reviewing quality performance, and validation/implementation of waived testing).
- Depending on site/department, may collect specimens (e.g., blood, urine, sputum) and prepare for analysis.
What We're Looking For
- Laboratory Scientist I: Must meet one of the following per CLIA regulations: bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical science, or associate’s degree in laboratory science/medical laboratory technology, or education and training equivalent to an associate degree in laboratory science including required coursework; or previously qualified as a technologist under CLIA on/before Feb 28, 1992; no experience required.
- Laboratory Scientist II: Must meet one of the following: bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science/medical technology or biology/chemistry with two years of direct clinical laboratory experience (physical science bachelor’s prior to 12/31/2024 acceptable); or associate’s degree with two years of direct clinical laboratory experience and required coursework; or two years’ direct clinical lab experience with CLIA equivalence; or completion of U.S. military medical laboratory training course with bachelor’s degree in biology/chemistry and one year of direct clinical laboratory testing experience.
- Laboratory Scientist III: Must meet one of the following: two years as Laboratory Scientist II at TriCore, or bachelor’s degree in biology/chemistry with four years of direct clinical laboratory experience; or bachelor’s degree in clinical/medical laboratory science/technology with two years of direct clinical laboratory experience; bachelor’s degree in physical science acceptable if completed before 12/31/2024.
