Job title: Kernel Engineer (General Track)
About the Role A general track for applications to Canonical's Linux kernel teams, open to all seniorities. This remote, worldwide opportunity lets you work on both stable and cutting-edge Linux kernels for Ubuntu and its wider ecosystem, with a focus on hardware enablement, virtualization, security, reliability and performance.
What You'll Do
- Contribute to the design, development and maintenance of Ubuntu Linux kernels across architectures and platforms from embedded devices to desktop/server systems to cloud environments.
- Collaborate with silicon vendors and upstream communities to ensure production readiness and fast delivery of patch sets.
- Work on kernel enablement, benchmarking, stress testing, and project planning/execution for Ubuntu kernels.
- Explore opportunities for technical leadership, engineering management, and directorship within Canonical's Linux Kernel Organization.
- Support production readiness and performance, while engaging with upstream efforts where applicable.
What We're Looking For
- Exceptional software engineering skills and a desire to work on Linux kernel development across hardware and virtualization domains.
- Interest in producing reliable, secure, and high-performance kernel code for Ubuntu and its ecosystem.
- Willingness to collaborate across teams and time zones; comfortable with ambiguity and multiple project tracks.
- Openness to leadership tracks (technical leadership, engineering management, or directorship) across the kernel organization.
