Job Description

Department: Juvenile Reports To: Division Manager or Program Director Supervises: N/A FLSA: Non-Exempt

Position Overview Benton County Juvenile Court is seeking a highly skilled and motivated professional to serve in a dual-role position, working 50% as a Functional Family Therapy (FFT) Therapist and 50% as a Juvenile Probation Counselor. This position supports youth and families involved with the juvenile justice system through evidence-based clinical intervention and structured probation services designed to enhance accountability, strengthen families, and promote long-term success.

FFT Therapist Duties (50%)

  • Provide evidence-based Functional Family Therapy services to youth ages 11–18 and their families within Benton County.
  • Deliver in-home FFT sessions following the FFT model phases: Engagement, Motivation, Behavior Change, and Generalization.
  • Maintain a caseload of 5 to 6 active families consistent with FFT staffing expectations.
  • Conduct assessments of family strengths, communication patterns, and risk factors.
  • Implement FFT-aligned, strength-based treatment plans to improve family functioning and reduce high-risk behaviors.
  • Provide crisis intervention, safety planning, and conflict-resolution support.
  • Participate in FFT LLC training, consultation, and fidelity monitoring requirements.
  • Complete required documentation in accordance with Benton County Juvenile Court standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy, Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, or related behavioral science field.

  • Washington licensure requires qualifying graduate coursework.

  • Licensure (Washington State Department of Health) Candidates may hold associate or full licensure under any of the following:

  • LMFT / LMFTA

  • LMHC / LMHCA

  • LICSW / LSWAIC

  • Or another Department of Health-recognized Mental Health Professional credential.

  • Other Requirements

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license and the ability to drive to in-home and field-based work.

  • Experience working with at-risk youth or families preferred.

  • Strong communication, crisis-management, and engagement skills.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary partners in a justice environment.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with juvenile probation or youth-serving systems.

  • Experience delivering FFT or another evidence-based family therapy model.

  • Familiarity with Benton County’s juvenile justice processes, community resources, and legal procedures.

  • This position is responsible for the coordination, facilitation, and oversight of programs under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court, including collaboration with local private and public agencies and service providers, with an end goal of creating a program that supports the Juvenile.

  • Coordinates the review, screening, assignment and/or termination of cases referred for program services.

  • Plans, organizes, and assists other counselors, support staff and/or consultants. Assists in the selection, training, and evaluation of staff.

  • Responsible for program compliance which could include policy updates, statistical reporting, progress reports, and developing and updating program manuals.

  • Leads the selection, training, and supervision of work study students and interns and volunteers who work in juvenile programs.

  • Works with community resources in developing and maintaining programs for youth under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court.

  • Participates in the overall planning and program development for the department.

  • Represents program or division with local and state agencies and associations. Promotes educational and prevention programs with schools, civic groups, media and the general public.

  • Provides training and consultation to agency staff regarding specific therapies, monitoring techniques, and division policies and procedures.

  • Leads and participates in case staffing, unit, and other meetings as required. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment and in the community (juvenile’s home, school, etc.) but also requires traveling to meetings, training, other departments, government agencies, juvenile case contacts, and local service providers. Exposure to physical hazard may occur occasionally when interviewing hostile clients with potential for violence. Exposed to sensitive and crime related information.

  • Requires walking on various types of surfaces, sitting, standing, often for long periods, maintaining balance, climbing stairs and inclines, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting. Requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, gripping with fingers and hands, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of evaluation and treatment methods, procedures, and legal requirements regarding juvenile offenders.

  • Thorough knowledge of all local, state, and federal laws, regulations or statutes related to juveniles.

  • Knowledge of trauma informed practices and ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Thorough knowledge of the juvenile justice system, court programs and procedures, and community resources available for juveniles.

  • Ability to train and direct the work of other staff members, volunteers, interns, or consultants, including the ability to understand and educate on County and Department policies and procedures.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters.

  • Ability to organize work and set priorities to meet deadlines and manage caseloads.

  • Ability to work well independently and to be self-motivated to act according to established policies, procedures, and practices.

  • Ability to coordinate and perform case management of juveniles under the jurisdiction of the court. Ability to develop and coordinate programs and services.

  • Ability to communicate in a professional business-like manner, both orally and in writing, especially during difficult or stressful situations.

  • Ability to analyze data, run reports, make recommendations for ongoing improvements within the Court.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and communication lines with at-risk youth or juvenile offenders and their parents/guardians, department staff, supervisors, other county employees, and employees of other local and state agencies.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in social or behavioral sciences.

  • Experience: Three years’ experience working directly with at-risk Juveniles preferably in a juvenile justice system, treatment center, or counseling center.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and must be able to maintain a defensive driving certificate as arranged by Benton County.

  • Must be age 21 or older.

  • Applicants will be required to pass a comprehensive background investigation, which shows no criminal activity that could directly impact the ability to perform the job.

  • Background checks may include pre-employment history questionnaire, along with polygraph and psychological evaluation.

  • Must be able to attend and pass the Washington State Training Commission’s Juvenile Probation Academy
