Stage - Robotics and Control System Engineer

Saipem
italy, Lombardy

About this role

As a Stage - Robotics and Control System Engineer at Saipem, you will be part of the SONSCOS Business line and contribute to the development of our hardware and software stack for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles. You will help architect the complex logic, perception, and decision-making engines that define our drones’ behavior. Our drones are treated as high-performance distributed systems, so you will emphasize code quality, system stability, and robust software/hardware design and integration.

  • System Architecture: Design and maintain scalable architectures using our custom distributed middleware, ensuring seamless communication between high-level autonomy and low-level execution.

  • Algorithm Development: Implement and optimize algorithms primarily in C++ and Python (for example path planning, localization, state estimation, navigation, computer vision, manipulation, neural networks, etc.).

  • Modern DevOps: Apply robust software practices in robotics, including containerization (Docker), automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines for AI integration and hardware-in-the-loop, with a focus on code quality.

  • Simulation & Virtualization: Build sophisticated simulation environments to stress-test software logic without requiring a physical robot on the desk.

  • Hardware Bridge: Be comfortable addressing hardware-level issues when a sensor misbehaves or a driver patch is needed, while focusing on the software brain.

  • Hardware Integration: Validate developments and algorithm designs with real hardware and within the existing software ecosystem.

  • Cybersecurity: Consider cybersecurity implications during development and identify countermeasures for potential flaws.

  • Education: Master’s Degree in Information Engineering (Computer Engineering, Control System Engineering, Electronics Engineering) or related fields.

  • Languages: Fluent Italian and English, both spoken and written.

  • Technical Knowledge:

  • Software Knowledge: Proficient in C++ (14/17/20) and Python 3, comfortable with multi-threading, asynchronous programming, and memory management.

  • Middleware: Experience with ROS/ROS2 preferred (communication patterns, lifecycle nodes, and DDS configuration) alongside our custom distributed middleware.

  • Architecture: Demonstrated ability to write modular, reusable code and an understanding of design patterns in real-time systems.

  • Tooling: Experience with Git flow, CMake, and Linux-based development environments.

  • Hardware Bravery: Comfortable debugging serial ports, analyzing logic analyzer traces, or troubleshooting a flaky sonar driver; preferred experience with Arduino and similar low-level platforms.

  • Travel: Some travel can be expected.

  • Additional note: Opportunity to collaborate with Saipem Sonsub Engineers in laboratories and workshops where we test our vehicles.
