About the Role This is a senior role leading our Middleware Engineering team, using deep technical expertise in Tomcat, EC2, container platforms, DataStage, Message Queue, Enterprise Service Bus, JP1 and HULFT to solve complex technical challenges. As an Operational Manager, you will own the Middleware operating teams and applications providing shared services across the AIG Japan organization. You will lead onshore and offshore vendor resources, ensuring high-quality outputs, business service levels, and compliance with local and international standards. The role emphasizes hands-on leadership, technical excellence, and driving innovation in reliability, observability, performance, and robust data integration.

Drive the adoption of Generative AI technologies in operational processes to enhance reliability, resiliency, and recoverability while ensuring robust, scalable, and secure service delivery.

What You'll Do

• Partner Vendor Management: manage India-based offshore vendors, coordinate development activities, quality standards, and deliverables; provide technical guidance and ensure knowledge transfer between onshore and offshore teams.
• Application Ownership: manage backend applications providing shared services for data interchange, data transformation, document image archives, and data subscriptions; provide interfaces for anti-social forces and MyNumber compliance information.
• Operational Excellence: act as the primary point of contact for senior leadership and key stakeholders, communicating progress, risks, and dependencies related to the middleware portfolio; directly lead, mentor, and manage multiple engineering teams (Web, Backend, Platform); foster a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and innovation; define and manage performance metrics to ensure timely delivery of high-quality solutions.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: work with Product Management and Business Stakeholders to translate strategy into actionable roadmaps and technical solutions.
• Technical Leadership and Strategy: define mid-to-long-term middleware technical strategy, drive platform sustainability, data integration, and adoption of AI/ML for product improvements; promote reliability, observability, and security across services.
• Security and Compliance: design security architecture, collaborate with Security and Infrastructure teams, implement secure disaster recovery and high-availability baselines, and provide governance recommendations for deployments.

What We're Looking For

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• Experience: 10+ years of engineering leadership and high-availability architecture delivery; 5+ years of team leadership or project lead experience; experience with Data Warehouse and insurance domain; multi-project/multi-country environment familiarity.
• Technical depth: strong hands-on experience with Tomcat, Pega, EC2, container/orchestration platforms; DataStage ETL, ESB, MQ/HULFT; CI/CD and DevOps tooling; cloud platforms; security and disaster recovery.
• Communication: fluent Japanese and English; ability to explain complex technical concepts to senior leadership and non-technical audiences.

Nice to Have

• Knowledge of Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or other Generative AI development tools.
• Experience with offshore/vendor management and cross-functional coordination.
• Data governance concepts (Data Warehouse, Customer Data Management, System Integration) and insurance/regulatory security best practices.
• AI/ML model applications for anomaly detection and intelligent automation.
