About the Role Jones Day is seeking multiple Intellectual Property (IP) patent prosecution roles—IP Practice Specialists, Patent Agents, and IP Legal Interns—to support our patent teams across a range of technical backgrounds. These roles involve working under attorneys to analyze disclosures, draft descriptions, and prepare patent materials, with the IP Practice Specialist serving as a technical advisor, Patent Agents as USPTO-registered practitioners, and IP Legal Interns gaining law school experience while contributing to matters. This position may offer a path to the patent bar or to a future patent attorney role; Jones Day also offers law school tuition assistance. What You'll Do
- Analyze invention disclosures, conduct prior art searches, draft technical descriptions, and assist with preparation of patent application materials
- Translate complex technical concepts into legal claims and communicate with the USPTO
- Support IP due diligence, patent landscape analyses, patent litigations, and/or post-grant proceedings
- Collaborate with inventors and attorneys; handle client-facing responsibilities on prosecution teams
- IP Practice Specialist: serve as a technical specialist under supervision; provide practical patent practice experience; bridge to USPTO patent bar or law school
- IP Legal Intern: employed full-time while attending law school part-time; contribute to research, drafting, and portfolio management; gain experience to transition into a patent attorney role after graduation What We're Looking For
- Advanced technical training in science or engineering
- Background aligned with IP Practice Specialist (technical advisor) or Patent Agent (registered with USPTO) or IP Legal Intern (in-law-school pathway)
- Ability to translate technical concepts into legal claims and collaborate with inventors and attorneys
- Strong written and verbal communication, attention to detail, and ability to work under supervision
- Interest in patent prosecution, diligence, and related IP activities Nice to Have
- Experience with IP due diligence, patent landscape analyses, or post-grant proceedings
- Prior exposure to patent litigation support or portfolio management
