Internal Organizer

About the Role SEIU Local 521 Internal Organizer based in Bakersfield, CA. You will work with members in one or more organized jurisdictions to build power for public service workers and their communities. The role focuses on developing campaigns, training stewards, and advancing workplace justice within Local 521's jurisdiction. What You'll Do

• Identify, recruit, train, and develop stewards, officers, and leaders.
• Lead and assist in developing plans for worksite campaigns on issues such as public budgets, contract negotiations, and safety.
• Create or assist in member-driven communications; write and edit leaflets, proposals, newsletters, etc.
• Negotiate or assist in contract negotiations, from proposals through strike preparation.
• Monitor stewards' and officers' representational duties, including grievances and disciplinary appeals; follow through.
• Meet timelines and procedures related to labor contracts, bylaws, and policies.
• Encourage participation in political and lobbying activities; help members hold elected officials accountable.
• Participate in and help lead residual organizing campaigns and recruit members.
• Lead staff or community-based committees; serve as a spokesperson. What We're Looking For
• Willingness to travel frequently within the local jurisdiction; willing to travel for extended periods as needed.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
• Strong commitment to social and economic justice and to organizing the unorganized through the labor movement.
• At least one year of experience as a full-time external organizer or equivalent community/rank-and-file organizing experience.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; good listening skills.
• Ability to create and execute detailed organizing plans; establish rapport with diverse workers.
• Good judgment and ability to prioritize among many tasks; strategic thinking and adaptability.
• Basic computer literacy and willingness to use technology where needed.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred but not required. Nice to Have
• Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred (if not required). Compensation & Benefits
• Salary: $86,649.69 – $110,620.48 per year.
