About the Role AFSCME Local 3299 is seeking an Internal Organizer based in Santa Barbara, CA to conduct internal organizing campaigns, develop worksite leaders, and move members to take collective action. The role involves organizing committees, worker assessments, home visits, and broader campaigning to improve working conditions and advance union objectives. This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to a Lead Organizer. What You'll Do
- Recruit and develop worksite leaders to participate in the Member Action Team and other union activities.
- Develop volunteer organizers and/or lost timers from within the AFSCME membership.
- Develop broad, representative organizing committees of worksite leaders, and train them to move worksite organizing campaigns.
- Visit job sites to communicate with workers.
- Visit workers in their homes.
- Write leaflets and other materials for organizing campaigns.
- Obtain and create employee charts.
- Maintain lists and, where applicable, operate computerized database systems.
- Inform Lead Organizer and other supervisors of activities, developments and progress of organizing activity, including worker meetings.
- Apply knowledge of basic labor law such as FMLA, ADA, OSHA, Workers' Compensation and Fair Housing and Employment.
- Meet goals and deadlines.
- Promptly return phone calls, especially to members.
- Complete administrative tasks such as Expense or Hudson Reports.
- Accept and apply feedback and constructive criticism from Lead Organizer or other supervisor.
- Perform related work as required.
- Effectively represent members in formal grievance procedures.
- Provide representation for members in cases involving violations of our contract.
- Organize workers to improve working conditions, consisting of taking action and/or preparing workers for meetings with management. What We're Looking For
- High School Diploma and 6 months to 3 years of experience in union organizing; or successful completion of an AFSCME 3299 internship or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of union organizing practice and principles.
- Leadership and motivational skills.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Fluent bilingual skills are desirable.
- Knowledge of anti-union employer tactics.
- Basic knowledge of labor laws, especially regarding union organizing.
- Basic computer skills, such as Word, Excel, and E-mail programs.

- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive; willingness to travel and work irregular hours as required. Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $82,053.58 – $125,926.19 per year.
