About this role

Interim Head of Legal (10 Month FTC)

London 10-month FTC In office 4 days/week

Do you have a track record of driving legal delivery in a fast-moving business?

Do you want to lead a high-performing legal team in a fast-scaling fintech business with real commercial impact?

Are you ready to embed governance, process and technology whilst managing a diverse caseload across the business?

Who We Are

Modulr is the payments automation platform that streamlines money movement with accuracy, control and reliability — built to scale. We process more than 200m transactions and over £180bn in payment value on an annualised basis, and we're trusted by over 6,000 businesses from fast-growing SMEs to global enterprises.

We automate how money moves into and out of a business (payroll, supplier payments, spend management and payment collection) through a single platform, connected to the accounting and payroll systems finance teams already use, and underpinned by principal memberships of Visa and Mastercard and direct access to central bank infrastructure.

As a regulated payments provider with over a decade of experience, we're the platform finance teams trust to run mission-critical operations. Modulr is backed by PayPal, FIS, General Atlantic, Blenheim Chalcot, Frog Capital and Highland Europe, with over 400 employees across London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Mumbai.

What You'll Do

  • Lead a team of four Legal Counsels (two Senior) as they grow to five with a Paralegal hire, managing workload allocation, priorities and development.

  • Manage client and supplier contracts across banking, regulatory, technology, employment, marketing and property; handle dispute caseloads and business-wide data protection and regulatory support.

  • Act as escalation point and strategic advisor for urgent or complex legal issues, serving as the first point of contact for leadership on legal matters.

  • Drive governance, process design and tool enhancements; ensure the legal function has effective templates, systems and workflows embedded across the organisation.

  • Ensure Modulr meets regulatory obligations, contracts efficiently with counterparties, and grows while managing risk appropriately.

  • Work closely with business functions to deliver advice grounded in commercial reality, not legal theory alone.

  • Who You Are

  • Essential

  • A minimum of 7 years PQE, with in-house experience (payments industry or other regulated financial services strongly preferred).

  • Track record of managing and developing a team, with experience operating within a legal function with a broad mandate.

  • Strong understanding of UK and EU financial regulations and ability to give strategic and regulatory advice in a commercial context.

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills; able to influence senior stakeholders and drive legal strategy at pace.

  • Nice to haves

  • Experience in a scaling fintech or fast-moving business environment.

  • Track record of implementing legal technology, governance frameworks and process improvements.

  • Ambition and drive to grow in a senior leadership position.

  • What We Offer You

  • Bonus — Our annual discretionary bonus, paid in May for the previous year, is based on both company and individual performance.

  • Flexible benefits — £1000 to spend on benefits to suit you, including private medical insurance, gym membership, dental and more.

  • Wellbeing app — Confidential, on-demand access to therapy, coaching, counselling, management training or mindfulness sessions with accredited professionals.

  • Holidays — 33 days annual leave (including bank holidays) plus your birthday off. Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day are fixed holidays in the UK.

  • Learning opportunities — Our two-day onboarding programme, ModStart, equips you for success. Learning doesn't stop there; we'll continue to support your development through various channels.

  • Company-wide events — Participate in collaborative and engaging events with colleagues across the business.

  • Bike to work scheme.

  • ModInclusion

  • At Modulr, we're committed to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture where everyone feels they belong and can bring their whole self to work. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds as we believe it's the right thing for our people, our business, and the community we operate in.
