Intellectual Property Law Partner | Requirements & Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Licensed and in good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Significant experience in intellectual property law, including one or more areas of trademark, copyright, patent, trade secret, licensing, or IP litigation
- Established intellectual property practice with a transferable book of business, ideally $350K+ annually
- Current law firm partner, solo practitioner, boutique firm owner, or senior attorney with an established client base
- Experience representing businesses, entrepreneurs, technology companies, brand owners, investors, or other clients with significant intellectual property needs
- Demonstrated ability to originate business and maintain long-standing client relationships
- Ability to independently manage sophisticated intellectual property matters and provide strategic legal counsel
- Entrepreneurial mindset with an interest in expanding an established practice
- Open to exploring a lateral partnership, practice integration, or potential small firm merger
Intellectual Property Law Partner | Preferred Background & Skills
- Established relationships with technology companies, startups, media and entertainment businesses, consumer brands, manufacturers, or other IP-driven organizations
- Experience advising clients on intellectual property protection, portfolio management, licensing, enforcement, and commercialization
- Strong background in trademark prosecution, copyright registration, trade secret protection, patent matters, or intellectual property litigation
- Experience handling complex licensing agreements, technology transactions, brand protection strategies, and IP-related disputes
- Background with an IP boutique, AmLaw firm, mid-sized business law firm, or independently operated practice
- Experience operating a solo practice, managing a boutique IP firm, or leading an intellectual property practice group
- Interest in leveraging a larger firm's resources to expand an existing client base
- Ability to identify cross-selling opportunities involving corporate transactions, commercial litigation, employment, franchise, and other complementary practice areas
- Experience mentoring or managing associates is a plus
Intellectual Property Law Partner | Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Transition and continue managing your existing intellectual property practice within a larger, supportive platform
- Maintain and expand relationships with your established clients while developing new business opportunities
- Advise businesses, entrepreneurs, technology companies, brand owners, and investors on intellectual property protection, enforcement, and commercialization
- Oversee trademark, copyright, patent, trade secret, licensing, or IP litigation matters within your area of expertise
- Develop and implement intellectual property strategies that support clients' business objectives
- Draft, review, and negotiate licensing agreements, technology agreements, IP assignments, confidentiality agreements, and related commercial contracts
- Manage intellectual property portfolios, including trademark and copyright registration, enforcement, and risk management
- Counsel clients on protecting intellectual property assets during mergers, acquisitions, financings, and other business transactions
- Collaborate with attorneys across complementary practice areas to provide comprehensive legal services and create additional opportunities for clients
- Leverage the firm's marketing, operational, and business development resources to grow your practice
- Help shape the continued expansion of the firm's Intellectual Property practice
