Job title: Insurance Billing Specialist
About the Role Under the supervision of the Clinic Manager, the Insurance Billing Specialist processes insurance claims, audits patient charts, posts insurance payments, and handles collections referrals to support financial integrity of the clinic.
What You'll Do
- Perform daily audit of all patient health records for financial accuracy and complete documentation; initiate corrections and communicate errors to students, faculty, or staff.
- Prepare and generate insurance claims for hard copy submission or batch electronic submission.
- Respond to insurer requests for additional information and coordinate resolution with internal and external teams.
- Post and allocate insurance payments accurately based on explanations of benefits; initiate refunds as needed.
- Manage accounts receivable: generate reports, analyze write offs and denial reasons, determine collectable balances, and refer delinquent accounts for collections.
- Review documentation and claims for accuracy to facilitate timely reimbursements across private and government programs, patient contracts, and grant projects.
- Communicate insurance requirements and CDT updates to personnel; collaborate with clinics to improve processes.
- Provide guidance on CDT coding to students, residents, faculty, and staff; support special grant programs and mock boards.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Clinic Manager and Director of PHCC.
What We’re Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent; three consecutive years in insurance billing and payment allocation in a high-volume dental setting; three years of customer service and patient relations.
- Preferred: advanced private dental or medical billing or general accounting policies and procedures, basic accounting and billing procedures, intermediate level dental terminology and treatment planning; experience with electronic health records; basic MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with accuracy and close attention to detail; maintain confidentiality; communicate professionally with faculty, residents, students, patients and staff.
- Experience resolving financial conflicts with insurers and patient accounts; support and contribute to a positive team environment; knowledge of public dental insurance claims.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion; ability to engage in culturally responsive practices.
Nice to Have
- Vocational or other training in the dental field; experience working with diverse backgrounds and cultures; ability to work in a university setting.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hiring Range: 22.68 to 30.04 per hour
