About the Role Railway is building the infrastructure that powers the Railway engine. As an infrastructure engineer, you will expose the knobs, bells, and whistles that allow users to build to the wildest dreams. The tooling you build will scale internal operations and the company to infinite and beyond. What You'll Do
- Build and maintain infrastructure components and tooling to empower users to build at scale.
- Design for today, with an eye toward 10x and 100x growth, and engineer for the long term.
- Create and maintain monitoring, alerts, and dashboards; share RFCs/docs to break down large tasks.
- Participate in on-call rotations and work within a globally distributed, high-ownership team while respecting boundaries. What We're Looking For
- Strong experience with application-level code (Golang, GRPC, PostgreSQL, etc); familiarity with OS primitives (syscalls, cgroups).
- Track record delivering projects from 0→N; ability to lead, scale, and manage tech debt; clear communication via RFCs/docs.
- On-call experience and comfort in a high-ownership environment; ability to say no when needed and deliver the 1% that matters.
- Experience collaborating with a globally distributed team; self-motivated and results-driven. Nice to Have
- Baremetal Networking at 1T+ request/mo scale (eBGP/eBPF, L2-L7, WireGuard)
- Orchestration at 100m+ containers scale (Runtimes/Hypervisors, Live-migrations, RTOS)
- Metrics/Logs/Traces at 1T request/mo scale (Vector, VictoriaMetrics, Clickhouse)
- Block storage, filesystems, replication at Petabyte/drive scale (ZFS, Ceph, VirtioFS)
- Efficient OCI build/transfer at TBps/sec scale (BuildKit, SOCI, Zot, overlayfs)
- Building “datacenters” (in quotes because closet server racks and HomeLabs count!)
