About the Role Reporting to the Plant Engineer, the Industrial Maintenance Reliability Technician (IMRT) contributes to maximum plant reliability by performing proactive maintenance and asset care within Sonoco’s Maintenance Excellence Process. This multi-craft role uses preventive, predictive, and root-cause methodologies to keep equipment in optimal condition and drive continuous improvement. What You'll Do

  • Understand and comply with safety policies and procedures; set the standard for safe behavior and actively support safety improvements.
  • Proactively maintain, install, troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, robotic/automation, hydraulic, pneumatic, and steam (location-specific) systems/processes/equipment.
  • Install/troubleshoot/maintain AC and DC drives/motors; troubleshoot PLC programs and, as location requires, modify/write PLC logic.
  • Weld and fabricate/install various electrical, piping, pneumatic, and mechanical equipment as required by location; perform shop work using machining and shop equipment (lathes, drills, milling machines).
  • Safely troubleshoot and assess equipment issues; implement effective corrective actions based on root cause analysis; pursue zero-failure initiatives.
  • Assist in developing/modifying and implementing procedures to drive zero failures; drive proactive maintenance and perform preventive/predictive maintenance tasks; contribute to maintenance procedures.
  • Communicate with operations to resolve abnormal or degraded equipment conditions and help develop operator skill sets for asset ownership.
  • Document all maintenance activity in the CMMS to build an accurate asset history; identify opportunities to improve inspections, lubrication, and hard-to-access areas for new or existing equipment.
  • Identify and use the proper tools for each job; meet 5S housekeeping standards in all maintenance areas.
  • The IMRT Senior role may serve as Lead or Maintenance Planner as required by location. What We're Looking For
  • Demonstrated competency in the skills outlined for IMRT I-III, plus Sr-level readiness.
  • Technical ability to proactively maintain, install, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, robotic/automation, hydraulic, pneumatic, and steam systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical schematics; working knowledge of PLC logic.
  • Experience with electrical work compliant with NFPA 70E; welding and machining/fabrication skills (location-dependent).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CMMS; strong troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and proactive maintenance mindset.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork; ability to adapt to change and lead improvements; strong problem-solving and documentation skills.
  • Education: Minimum high school diploma; Preferred Associate’s degree in Mechatronics, Industrial Maintenance, or related technical field. Nice to Have
  • Additional certifications or location-specific skill levels in welding, machining, or PLC programming.
  • Prior lead/maintenance planning experience and ability to mentor teammates. Compensation & Benefits
