Job title: HVAC/R Technician
About the Role The class works under immediate supervision and requires basic knowledge of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) technology and its processes and blueprint reading in order to assist with installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Performs general preventative maintenance on equipment.
What You'll Do
- Assist with installation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC/R equipment including residential split ACs, heat pumps, refrigeration compressors, mini-splits, PTACs, air-cooled/water-cooled chillers, cooling towers, pumps, walk-in/reach-in coolers and freezers, packaged rooftop air-handlers, and compressed air dryers.
- Frequently charge, recover, and dispose of refrigerants in accordance with regulations.
- Assist with installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating appliances such as natural gas furnaces, auxiliary steam boilers, hydronic boilers, radiators, unit-ventilators, radiant panels, electric resistance heaters, air-curtains, steam-to-hot water exchangers, steam traps, condensate return packages, steam regulators, and related accessories.
- Assist with installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of campus ventilation systems and equipment including air handling equipment, blowers, exhaust fans, dampers, VAV boxes and interconnecting ductwork, diffusers, registers and grilles.
- Assist with installing, modifying, and/or correcting issues with refrigeration, heating, and chilled water piping systems made of copper, malleable iron, and PVC.
- Shadow/assist trade personnel and/or contractors in maintenance repairs; perform building maintenance and trade tasks; pick up parts; maintain equipment; operate snow/ice removal and grass cutting equipment; attend required meetings and training; may supervise student employees.
- Assist with training new hires and perform other duties within the scope of responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
What We're Looking For
- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least one year of certifiable work experience or training in HVAC/R.
- Knowledge of HVAC/R technology, blueprint reading, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
- Skill in HVAC/R maintenance and repair; hand and power tool operation; minor welding.
- Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and interpret various instructions.
- EPA Section 608 Universal Certification must be obtained within one year of hire date.
Nice to Have
- Three or more years of verifiable experience in installation and/or service of commercial HVAC/R systems.
- Graduation from an accredited trade school/training program.
- EPA Section 608 Type I and Type II certified.
