HSE Manager

International Paper is seeking an HSE Manager in North Kansas City, MO. The role reports to the Site Manager and works with regional HSE staff to lead systems, processes and programs that promote a positive safety culture and a healthy, injury-free workplace. The position is salaried full-time and eligible for IP’s annual incentive plan.

Responsibilities

• Lead and communicate HSE systems, processes and procedures to support local, state and federal regulatory requirements and company HSE programs

• Support and foster the safety culture and environmental compliance of the manufacturing facility

• Assign, track and close out HSE activities and corrective action plans; maintain appropriate documentation

• Assess facility programs against performance standards and develop corrective action plans to close gaps

• Manage leading indicators such as safe work observations, 5S, hazard recognition and controls

• Lead and maintain contractor safety efforts; assist in developing contractor work plans and monitor compliance

• Manage energy control, hearing conservation and chemical management programs

• Participate in internal and external HSE audits and inspections; coordinate and review results to ensure deficiencies are corrected

• Lead incident investigations, prepare files, develop corrective actions, and manage workers’ compensation processes

• Plan, deliver and track mandatory employee training; oversee onboarding and make-up training

• Oversee plant-wide HSE communications; collaborate with area HSE and site leaders to prepare and deliver information at plant-wide meetings

• Promote sustainability of safety leadership tools and provide feedback on leadership skill improvements

• Support active cross-functional safety committee participation

• Maintain environmental permits, inspections, certifications and submissions (VOC, wastewater, stormwater, cyclone, silo, Tier II, DMRs, Air, etc.)

• Lead deliberate improvement efforts to enhance HSE performance

• Work with the leadership team to develop and implement site-specific annual HSE objectives

• Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in EHS required

• 3–5 years of HSE experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment

• Experience with progressive HSE cultures and safety leadership

• Knowledge of HSE compliance and regulatory requirements

• Strong written and verbal communication skills; effective presentation and delivery abilities

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks

• Ability to collaborate to achieve HSE requirements and objectives

• Willingness to travel for training, meetings and benchmarking; weekly support for multiple facilities within the geography
