About the Role
Under the general direction of laboratory management, the Histotechnologist prepares tissue specimens for examination by a pathologist, performing fixation, embedding, sectioning, and staining. The role includes maintaining equipment and records, performing quality control, and supporting accreditation activities. The incumbent may assist other histotechnicians and perform grossing duties as instructed.
What You'll Do
- Prepare tissue specimens for examination by fixing, embedding, and cutting skin tissue; apply a wide variety of immunohistochemical stains as well as other stains ordered by the pathologist.
- Prepare solutions, maintain laboratory equipment, and keep detailed records of work processed.
- Perform quality control procedures and evaluate results to resolve minor technical and equipment problems in the lab.
- Support activities required for JCAHO accreditation by assisting in updating lab manuals and routine maintenance logs as needed.
- Ensure that equipment is maintained and used properly; monitor antibody, reagent, and control material logs to ensure accuracy and currency.
- Perform the full scope of technical duties in the laboratory as needed; assist other histotechnicians with fielding technical questions and performing daily tasks; may perform grossing technical duties as instructed.
What We're Looking For
- Ability to perform fixation, embedding, sectioning of skin tissue and apply immunohistochemical stains and other stains as ordered.
- Experience preparing solutions, maintaining lab equipment, and keeping detailed records.
- Knowledge of quality control procedures and ability to evaluate results to resolve minor technical and equipment problems.
- Ability to support JCAHO accreditation activities, including updating lab manuals and routine maintenance logs.
- Skill in maintaining equipment and ensuring proper use; monitoring antibody, reagent, and control material logs for accuracy and currency.
- Willingness to assist other histotechnicians with questions and daily tasks; may perform grossing duties as instructed.
