Histology Technician
Certified
Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologist.

POSITION SUMMARY
Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologist.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Uses and maintains necessary laboratory equipment and apparatus
- Prepares and maintains all the integrity of solutions and reagents necessary for tissue fixation, processing and staining
- Receives and properly identifies specimens from surgical/diagnostic procedures and autopsy
- Assists pathologist in grossing of specimens maintaining specimen integrity
- Performs routine and special stains, frozen sections, embedding and microtomy
- Files tissue blocks and stains for future reference
- Utilizes computer system to accession specimens, generate worksheets and labels
- Locates patient results and generates miscellaneous reports as required
- Maintains quality control records and statistics according to department policy and regulatory agencies
- Performs clerical and office functions as required
- Assist with training new employees
- Monitors inventory and supplies
- Monitor use of morgue supplies
- May occasionally assist with an autopsy
- Maintains and updates departmental policies and procedures
- Performs other duties as assigned
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrates the ability to use a personal computer and various software programs applicable to the position
- Demonstrates the ability to operate applicable office equipment
- Exhibits the ability to deal effectively interdepartmentally & with the public
- Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality, think and act independently with minimal supervision
- Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location
- Demonstrates a general knowledge of histologic techniques, procedures, and safety precautions
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES
- Must meet current qualifications listed under section “Clinical Laboratory Personnel Requirements” defined in the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Act of 1988 (CLIA-88) and Oregon Department of Human Services Regulations, College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission standards. CAP reserves the right to set requirements that are more stringent than those of CLIA-88 (Copy of academic degree/transcript required upon hire if performing Moderate Complexity Testing)
- Registry as Histology Technician with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent
EXPERIENCE

Experience with LIS and HIS computer systems, tissue processor, embedding center, automatic stainer, automated coverslipper, analytic balance, automated microtome, microwave, microscope, telephone, tissue flotation bath, volumetric glassware, cryostat and recycler
