Job title: Heating Plant Operator (Boiler Operator)

About the Role Operate Luther College Heating Plant to provide a reliable steam supply to the campus. Maintain and validate automation systems for proper operation and analyze data to identify potential operational savings. Perform duties safely to protect the campus community.

What You'll Do

  • Operate boilers safely and respond to emergencies.
  • Perform water tests for boiler systems, softeners, and condensate; manage chemicals and high-temperature water.
  • Maintain daily plant records; log data for chillers and water softeners; review building automation system for proper set points and parameters; re-commission controls as scheduled.
  • Test steam lines to buildings and cooling towers; ensure proper chemicals and operation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs from the work order system.
  • Handle plumbing/HVAC requests; replace lamps, reset circuits, etc.; welding/brazing and metal fabrication as needed.
  • Unload fuel transports; assist with campus repairs.
  • May supervise student workers; other duties as assigned.
  • Be prepared to work weekends and be on call; shifts up to 12 hours; night shifts possible.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: High School Diploma required; mechanical or electrical background; experience with boiler operation.
  • Skills: Computer skills; ability to read and interpret blueprints; problem-solving and communication.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Driver's License (required); Boiler Operator 1 and 2 (ability to obtain through Luther); Certified Pool Operator (CPO) (ability to obtain through Luther); Private School or College Routine Maintenance Specialty License (ability to obtain through Luther).
  • Qualities: Ability to cultivate inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college.

Nice to Have

  • Boiler Operator 1/2 certification
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
  • Private School or College Routine Maintenance Specialty License

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $17.34-$20.40 per hour (USD). Overtime may be required; rotating weekends and on-call.
