Job Summary

The Head Teacher will provide strategic and operational leadership for the school's academic activities, staff management, student development, and overall school administration. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining high teaching and learning standards, ensuring effective curriculum delivery, promoting discipline, and fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. The ideal candidate should have strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills, alongside a solid background in teaching and school administration. The Head Teacher will work closely with teachers, parents, students, and school management to achieve the school's academic goals and maintain high educational standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Academic Leadership and Curriculum Management: Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the school's academic programmes. Ensure effective curriculum delivery in line with approved educational standards and relevant government requirements. Monitor teaching and learning activities to maintain high academic standards. Conduct regular classroom observations and provide constructive feedback to teachers. Review lesson plans, schemes of work, assessment methods, and students' academic performance. Introduce innovative teaching methods and strategies to improve learning outcomes. Coordinate academic activities, examinations, assessments, and school-wide learning programmes.

  • Staff Management and Development: Supervise, motivate, and provide guidance to teachers and non-teaching staff. Participate in the recruitment, onboarding, and induction of teaching staff. Monitor staff performance and conduct regular appraisals. Identify training and professional development needs and organise relevant capacity-building activities. Promote teamwork, accountability, professionalism, and a positive work culture. Address staff performance concerns and recommend appropriate corrective measures where necessary. Manage staff timetables, class allocations, and academic responsibilities.

  • Student Welfare and Discipline: Promote a safe, supportive, and disciplined school environment. Monitor students' academic progress, attendance, behaviour, and overall development. Ensure the effective implementation of the school's disciplinary policies and student conduct standards. Address behavioural concerns and work with parents and relevant staff to resolve student-related issues. Promote students' moral development, leadership skills, and extracurricular participation. Ensure appropriate safeguarding practices are implemented to protect students from abuse, neglect, bullying, and other risks.

  • School Administration and Operations: Oversee the day-to-day academic and administrative operations of the school. Develop and monitor academic calendars, school timetables, and activity schedules. Ensure classrooms and learning facilities are conducive to effective teaching and learning. Coordinate school assemblies, events, excursions, meetings, and extracurricular activities. Maintain accurate academic and administrative records. Work with the school administrator and other relevant personnel to ensure smooth school operations.

  • Parent and Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain effective communication with parents and guardians regarding students' academic performance, behaviour, and welfare. Organise and participate in parent-teacher meetings and school engagement activities. Address parental concerns professionally and promptly. Build positive relationships with parents, staff, education authorities, and other stakeholders. Represent the school at relevant educational events and meetings when required.

  • Performance Monitoring and Quality Assurance: Monitor academic performance through assessments, examinations, classroom observations, and periodic reviews. Analyse students' academic results and identify areas for improvement. Establish and implement strategies to improve teaching quality and student learning outcomes. Prepare academic performance reports for the school proprietor or management. Ensure compliance with relevant educational policies, school standards, and operational guidelines. Drive continuous improvement in the school's academic and administrative processes.

  • Strategic Planning and School Development: Collaborate with management to establish and implement the school's academic vision and objectives. Contribute to the development of policies and initiatives that enhance educational quality. Identify opportunities for academic growth, innovation, and improved student engagement. Support the implementation of school improvement plans. Recommend improvements to teaching resources, learning facilities, and academic programmes.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education (B.Ed.) or a relevant discipline with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) where applicable. 5 – 7 years of teaching experience, with at least 2–3 years in a school leadership or administrative role. Relevant teaching qualification and TRCN registration or eligibility for registration. Strong knowledge of the Nigerian educational curriculum and relevant educational policies. Proven experience in academic planning, curriculum implementation, teacher supervision, and student management. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Google Workspace, and school management systems. Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills. Strong organisational, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution abilities. High levels of integrity, professionalism, accountability, and emotional intelligence. Ability to work effectively with teachers, parents, students, and school management.
