Head of Social Media
About the Role
We are building the next generation of our digital news offering, with a clear ambition to create a video-first, social-first news experience designed around how audiences consume information today.
We are looking for a Head of Social Media to join our team. The candidate will play a key role in this transformation and shape how our digital news platform reaches, engages and grows audiences across social platforms.
This is not a traditional social media management role. We are looking for someone who combines strong editorial instinct, deep understanding of social platforms and audience behavior, a data-driven mindset, and a track record of turning news and stories into compelling platform-native content.
Job Description
- Define and lead the social media strategy across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X and emerging platforms
- Drive audience growth and engagement through data-driven content and distribution strategies
- Own social media analytics, performance reporting and KPI monitoring, translating insights into actionable recommendations to optimize content, distribution and audience growth
- Build a social-first and video-first content approach, ensuring stories are conceived and adapted specifically for each platform rather than simply redistributed from the website or TV
- Work closely with the editorial, video and audience teams to identify stories with strong social potential and determine the best format, angle and distribution strategy
- Lead the approach to short-form video, including Reels, TikTok, Shorts, explainers and other native formats
- Bring strong news judgment and understand how breaking news, major stories and developing topics should be handled across social platforms
- Define and track key performance metrics, including reach, engagement, watch time, completion rates, follower/subscriber growth and referrals
- Continuously experiment with new formats, storytelling approaches, tools and emerging platform trends.
- Build effective workflows between social, editorial, video and other newsroom teams
- Lead and develop the social media team and help define the capabilities required as the new digital newsroom evolves
Requirements
- Significant experience in digital media, publishing, news, content or another high-volume content environment, ideally within a newsroom or digital publisher
- Proven experience leading social media strategy and delivering measurable audience growth across multiple platforms
- Strong analytical and reporting capabilities, with hands-on experience using social media analytics, reporting and performance monitoring tools (e.g. Meta Business Suite, YouTube Analytics, TikTok Analytics, Google Analytics 4, Looker Studio or similar)
- Ability to interpret performance data, identify trends and translate insights into actionable content and audience growth strategies
- Strong understanding of social-first storytelling and short-form video
- Excellent editorial judgment and the ability to identify what makes a story relevant and engaging for different audiences and platforms
- Strong understanding of platform algorithms, audience behavior and content performance
- Experience managing and developing teams
- The ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving environment where priorities can change quickly
