Job Title: Head of Finance and Treasury

Location: Abuja (FCT)

Job Overview

  • The Head of Finance & Treasury will be responsible for the Bank’s financial management, treasury operations, regulatory reporting, budgeting, management accounts, and financial controls.
  • The role will ensure accurate and timely financial information, prudent liquidity management, compliance with CBN and other applicable requirements, and provide management and the Board with clear financial insight for decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Strategy & Planning:

  • Develop and implement the company’s financial strategy in line with business and investment objectives.
  • Prepare annual budgets, financial forecasts, and cash-flow projections.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to the MD/CEO and Board to support investment and business decisions.
  • Monitor financial performance against budgets and recommend corrective actions.

Treasury & Cash Management:

  • Manage the company’s cash position, liquidity, and working capital.
  • Monitor daily cash balances, inflows, outflows and funding requirements.
  • Develop and maintain cash-flow forecasts to ensure adequate liquidity.
  • Oversee bank accounts, transfers, payments and other treasury transactions.
  • Manage relationships with banks, financial institutions and other funding partners.
  • Optimise idle cash while ensuring funds remain available for operational and investment needs.

Investment & Portfolio Finance:

  • Support the financial evaluation and structuring of investment opportunities.
  • Conduct financial analysis, investment appraisals, scenario analysis and returns assessment.
  • Monitor the financial performance of investments and portfolio companies.
  • Track investment income, interest, dividends, maturities and expected returns.
  • Support due diligence on prospective investments and financial transactions.

Financial Reporting & Management Information:

  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports.
  • Produce management accounts, cash-flow reports, variance analyses and financial dashboards.
  • Present financial performance and treasury updates to senior management and the Board.
  • Ensure financial information is timely, accurate and useful for decision-making.

Financial Controls & Risk Management:

  • Establish and maintain strong financial and treasury controls.
  • Monitor financial, liquidity, market, credit and investment risks.
  • Ensure appropriate approval limits and segregation of duties are maintained.
  • Identify financial control weaknesses and implement corrective measures.
  • Monitor exposure to foreign exchange, interest-rate and other relevant financial risks.

Accounting & Compliance Oversight:

  • Oversee accounting operations, reconciliations, payables, receivables and general ledger activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable financial reporting standards, tax regulations and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate annual audits and provide required financial information to auditors.
  • Liaise with tax advisers, auditors, regulators and other external stakeholders where required.

Budget & Cost Management:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process across the organisation.
  • Monitor expenditure against approved budgets.
  • Analyse significant variances and recommend cost-control measures.
  • Ensure expenditure is properly authorised and supported by appropriate documentation.

Banking & Financial Relationships:

  • Maintain strong relationships with commercial banks, investment banks, fund managers and other financial institutions.
  • Negotiate banking terms, interest rates, transaction fees and other financial arrangements where appropriate.
  • Review financing options and advise management on optimal funding structures.

Team Leadership:

  • Lead and supervise the Finance and Treasury team.
  • Set performance objectives and monitor team deliverables.
  • Develop staff capability through coaching, training and performance management.
  • Ensure finance processes are properly documented and consistently followed.

Knowledge of Financial Services:

  • Candidates with an understanding of concepts such as credit facilities, interest rates, liquidity, capital, investments, regulatory compliance, insurance, underwriting, claims and reinsurance will have an advantage.
  • Knowledge of real estate concepts including development financing, project cash flow, ROI, IRR, construction timelines and investment feasibility is also desirable.
  • The candidate is not expected to provide financial, legal or regulatory advice, but should be sufficiently commercially literate to understand discussions and identify matters requiring specialist input.

Requirements

  • BSc/HND in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related disciplines.
  • Ideally 8–12 years relevant experience, with meaningful experience in a bank, MFB or regulated financial institution.
  • At least 3–5 years in a finance/treasury leadership or senior-management role.
  • ACA/ACCA or equivalent professional qualification strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of CBN/NDIC reporting, IFRS, taxation, treasury and liquidity management.
  • Experience with core banking systems and strong Excel/data-analysis capability.
  • Exposure to non-interest banking/Islamic finance is highly desirable.
  • Strong integrity, attention to detail and ability to challenge management constructively.
  • High level of discretion, integrity and confidentiality.

Regulatory & Governance Awareness:

An understanding of the Nigerian corporate and regulatory environment will be an advantage, particularly familiarity with the roles of institutions such as the:

  • Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
  • National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).
  • Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
  • Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
