Position Summary and Key Responsibilities

Position Summary: To be a head coach/assistant head coach at McKendree University, individuals must display an ability to set and achieve shortterm team goals, as well as the long term goals for the program.

As a coach within the athletic program, responsibilities include aligning practices with the professionalism and high moral standards that are expected of all McKendree University employees. This position acts as the Head Coach for Hockey level D3 and Assistant Head Coach for Hockey level D1. This is a full time position and will divide its time between the two teams.

Key Responsibilities

• TEACH/COACH/MENTOR 70% Time Primary Responsibility

A Head Coach:

• Communicates clear expectations to the student-athletes for appropriate conduct on and off the field, court, mat, course, track, and in and out of the pool
• Displays competent knowledge of the sport (strategy, adjustments, and practice design)
• Communicates in a positive fashion with student-athletes throughout the season
• Creates organized and appropriate practice and competition plans
• Develops and teaches conditioning and drills for in-season and off-season, scouting and game planning during competition season

An Assistant Coach:

• Helps to communicate clear expectations to the student-athletes for appropriate conduct on and off the field, court, mat, course, track, and in and out of the pool

• Displays competent knowledge of the sport (strategy, adjustments, and practice design)

• Communicates in a positive fashion with student-athletes throughout the season

• Helps the head coach to create organized and appropriate practice and competition plans

• Assists with conditioning and drills for in-season and off-season, scouting and game planning during competition season

• Displays knowledge of video use and works with student-athletes to study and improve performance

• Assists head coach with all areas of leadership with student-athletes as assigned by the head coach

• OPERATIONS/MANAGER 30% Time

A Head Coach:

• Attends all required meetings related to the team and directs assistants in this area as needed
• Passes the NCAA recruiting exam yearly if applicable
• Recruits student-athletes to meet recruiting goals and assigns recruiting duties to assistants as needed
• Communicates accurately with the athletic department including schedules, transportation, rosters, and results

An Assistant Coach:

• Attends all required meetings related to the team as directed by the head coach
• If applicable, pass the NCAA recruiting exam yearly if recruiting off campus
• Assists head coach with recruiting if requested
• Helps the head coach communicate accurately with the athletic department including schedules, transportation, rosters, and results
• Creates a safe environment for the athletes of the team including facility supervision-practice, competition and locker rooms

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of NCAA or other applicable national organization rules and regulations
• Knowledge of technical skills, playing styles, and safety practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

• In addition to minimum qualifications, Bachelor’s degree; coaching experience in area of specialty; recruiting experience.

• Work Conditions

• Varies; based on recruiting, games, and practice times. Weekend and evening hours required; travel mandatory.
