Currently recruiting a Head Certified Athletic Trainer to oversee the Athletic Training Program supporting the 37th Training Wing s Human Performance VIPER II mission at Joint Base San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. This head athletic trainer position combines clinical sports medicine services with program leadership, staffing coordination, quality oversight, and research support across the Sports Medicine Hub and Alternate Training Facilities at JBSA-Lackland, Chapman Annex, and Camp Bullis. Normal hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. To 4:30 p.m., with flexibility for early morning, evening, and weekend training events. The regular schedule does not exceed 40 hours per week or ten consecutive hours per day, including a one-hour lunch. No on-call duty is required. Federal holidays, directed down days, and resiliency days are excluded; AETC Family Days require work. Telework may be authorized at the direction of the 37th Human Performance Squadron Commander.

DUTIES OF THE HEAD CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER:

  • Perform the clinical and operational duties assigned to Staff and Senior Athletic Trainers, including injury prevention, musculoskeletal evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and follow-up within professional scope.
  • Provide therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, joint mobilization, authorized modalities, taping, bracing, and strength and conditioning interventions.
  • Provide training-event medical coverage, emergency triage, first aid, BLS, and initial treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and exertional conditions within scope.
  • Oversee the Athletic Training Program under designated sports medicine and Human Performance Squadron leadership, ensuring effective operations at the Sports Medicine Hub and Alternate Training Facilities.
  • Serve as the liaison between Athletic Trainers and the Human Performance Squadron, participating in required program meetings and briefings.
  • Serve as the senior clinical authority and provide comprehensive oversight of contract personnel, including quality assurance, performance management, risk mitigation, and adherence to established protocols.
  • Manage patient flow, care coordination, and referral processes, ensuring referrals are accurate, appropriate, and consistent with approved guidelines.
  • Oversee infection control, patient safety, privacy, access to care, and administrative operations across athletic training facilities.
  • Prepare and manage daily duty schedules for Staff and Senior Athletic Trainers, review and sign leave requests, and include approved leave in projected schedules.
  • Proactively notify designated Human Performance Squadron leadership and the contractor of staffing deficits, attendance issues, or other concerns affecting mission support.
  • Coordinate with the 37th Training Wing s resource management personnel to secure equipment and supplies needed to sustain clinical operations.
  • Collaborate with sports medicine providers, the 559th Trainee Health Squadron, and other medical experts on approved prospective or retrospective research.
  • Share research findings with appropriate Department of Defense training organizations and pursue peer-reviewed publication as directed.
  • Develop, present, and implement continuous process improvement initiatives addressing clinical care, injury prevention, rehabilitation, healthcare administration, and program communication.
  • Educate service members on injury prevention, self-rehabilitation, conditioning, nutrition related to physical activity, and heat illness prevention.
  • Complete and sign electronic health record documentation within 72 hours and fulfill required patient care documentation peer reviews.
  • Complete government ATV training and operate assigned vehicles as needed for event medical coverage.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE HEAD CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER:

  • Required: Doctoral degree, DAT, PhD, or EdD, in addition to either a master s degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Program or a bachelor s degree in Athletic Training from an accredited university.
  • An education equivalency determination may be requested through the contractor and is subject to Government approval.
  • Required: At least ten years of experience diagnosing, treating, and/or preventing musculoskeletal injuries as a certified athletic trainer in high school, college, professional sports, or military training settings.
  • Required: At least three years of experience overseeing a sports medicine or athletic training program consisting of three or more Athletic Trainers and/or Strength and Conditioning Coaches.
  • Preferred: Publication of at least one peer-reviewed original research article as an author or investigator. Candidates claiming this qualification must provide proof of the article if the primary author, or professional reference letters from a lead investigator if not the primary author.
  • Must possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted Texas athletic trainer license.
  • Must maintain current athletic trainer certification through the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) or National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), as specified in the PWS.
  • Must possess in-person Basic Life Support certification accepted by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Online courses do not satisfy the requirement.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen for access to U.S. Government networks.
  • Must provide required qualification and security investigative documentation and complete the Government s competency-based review before placement.
  • Must meet documented occupational health, physical examination/testing, immunization, and TB screening requirements. The PWS specifies negative two-step TB skin testing or, for individuals with a past positive skin test, a negative chest X-ray within 12 months before beginning services.
  • Must be able to demonstrate running techniques, exercises, injury prevention drills, and rehabilitation movements; lift 50 pounds from ground to waist level; and perform recurring bending, stooping, crouching, and stretching.
  • Must be able to work in field conditions and varied weather and support assignments within a 40-mile radius. Reassignments require two weeks notice; local travel may occur approximately monthly.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. Driver s license and complete required training before operating Government vehicles.
  • Must complete required agency training and comply with clinical protocols, patient privacy, infection control, safety, and professional conduct requirements.
