Guidance Counsellor

We are seeking a compassionate, responsible, and professional Guidance Counsellor to support the academic, emotional, social, behavioural, and career development of students in our secondary school. The successful candidate will work closely with students, parents, teachers, and school management to promote students’ overall wellbeing and help them make informed decisions about their education and future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counselling to students on academic, personal, social, emotional, and behavioural matters
  • Support students experiencing academic difficulties, peer-related issues, family concerns, or other challenges affecting their wellbeing and school performance
  • Assist students in identifying their strengths, interests, abilities, and areas for improvement
  • Provide academic guidance and support students in making appropriate subject and educational choices
  • Provide career guidance and help students explore suitable career paths, universities, courses, and further education opportunities
  • Monitor students’ academic and behavioural progress and identify students who may require additional support
  • Maintain confidential and accurate counselling records and student welfare documentation
  • Work with teachers and school management to address student behavioural, academic, and welfare concerns
  • Communicate appropriately with parents or guardians regarding students’ welfare, academic progress, and behavioural concerns where necessary
  • Support the development and implementation of student wellbeing and personal development programmes
  • Organise counselling sessions, workshops, and awareness programmes on topics relevant to secondary school students
  • Support students in developing effective study habits, time management, decision-making, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Assist students with conflict resolution and encourage positive relationships among students
  • Identify and appropriately escalate safeguarding, welfare, or serious behavioural concerns to school management
  • Promote a safe, respectful, inclusive, and supportive school environment
  • Participate in school meetings, events, orientations, and other student-related activities
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, school management, parents, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Maintain professional confidentiality and handle sensitive student information appropriately
  • Perform other counselling and student-support duties as assigned by the school management

Requirements

  • Previous experience working as a Guidance Counsellor, School Counsellor, Student Support Officer, or in a similar role, preferably in a secondary school
  • Excellent communication, listening, counselling, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to relate effectively with teenagers and understand the challenges faced by secondary school students
  • Strong emotional intelligence, patience, empathy, and professionalism
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately
  • Strong observation, assessment, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, and school management
  • Good organisational and record-keeping skills
  • Ability to manage multiple student cases and responsibilities effectively
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and basic administrative tools
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Must be willing to resume immediately

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Guidance and Counselling, Psychology, Education, Educational Psychology, or a related field

  • A professional qualification or certification in counselling will be an added advantage

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant counselling or student-support experience, preferably in a secondary school environment
