About the Role The Grassroots Manager leads ACS CAN's grassroots advocacy across an assigned geography, recruiting and developing volunteers and coordinating fundraising through volunteer networks. This remote role emphasizes DEI, requires compliance with lobbying protocols, and collaborates with regional and national teams to advance cancer-related policy and volunteer-driven initiatives. Some travel within Texas and a preference for home-based work in the Greater Houston area are part of the role.

What You'll Do

  • Develops and implements comprehensive local and state grassroots strategies and advocacy campaigns, in conjunction with the state Government Relations Director, to support cancer-related policy initiatives.
  • Supports federal campaigns and congressional champion building; coordinates with national teams to execute a grassroots strategy; organizes volunteers for federal activities.
  • Writes and disseminates emails, legislative alerts, talking points, and training materials for a diverse audience of volunteers.
  • Plans and manages Cancer Action lobby days or similar events (including virtual) to drive engagement and policy wins.
  • Maintains ACS CAN web pages and social media accounts according to organizational guidelines and standards; coordinates where applicable.
  • Identifies and develops volunteers with personal stories related to ACS CAN's policy campaigns; engages in story collection where applicable.
  • Serves as the staff manager of the volunteer structure in the assigned geography; coordinates with leadership volunteers; fills vacancies and ensures capacity.
  • Applies the principles of Direct-Action Organizing to organize and manage state legislative campaigns; coordinates with grassroots partners and regional/national ACS CAN teams.
  • Represents ACS CAN and its mission professionally, in a manner commensurate with the organization's brand; establishes strategic collaborations with other organizations as appropriate.
  • Ensures that in leading electoral activity in the assigned state(s) through Cancer Votes, the program adheres to IRS and ACS CAN reporting requirements and follows all policies.
  • Integration and Capacity Building: Attracts, trains, and develops volunteers through a variety of channels, implementing development, communication, training, and recognition programs; strengthens grassroots capacity and maintains relationships with grasstops and volunteers.
  • Facilitates local, state, and federal grassroots advocacy by volunteers and builds relationships with elected officials and staff; maintains direct local relationships as appropriate; supports cross-functional collaboration with regional staff, coalitions, and partners.
  • Conducts training as needed for volunteers and ACS staff, equipping others for interactions with elected officials and their staff; maintains volunteer data in ACS CAN databases.
  • Volunteer Fundraising: Drives volunteer fundraising in the assigned state; encourages volunteer-led fundraising that aligns with organizational guidelines and participates in fundraising activities to achieve goals; supports policy forums or other fundraising events as applicable.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years of relevant work experience; political issues or campaign organizing experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience attracting, developing, and engaging volunteers preferred; fundraising experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work remotely with regular travel within the Greater Houston area and some travel to other parts of Texas.
