About the Role The Grassroots Manager at ACS CAN leads a comprehensive grassroots advocacy program across an assigned geography, focusing on volunteer engagement, fundraising support, and advancing local, state, and federal policy priorities. This remote role travels regularly within Connecticut and Rhode Island and collaborates with ACS CAN and American Cancer Society teams while complying with lobbying protocols.
What You'll Do
- Develop and implement local and state grassroots strategies and advocacy campaigns; support federal campaigns and congressional champion building; organize volunteers to complete federal activities in collaboration with national teams.
- Communicate strategic messages tailored to specific political environments and manage volunteer communications (emails, legislative alerts, talking points, and training materials).
- Plan and manage Cancer Action lobby days or similar events (including virtual events) to drive engagement and policy wins; maintain ACS CAN web pages and social media accounts per guidelines.
- Identify and develop volunteers with compelling personal stories; supervise the staff structure of volunteers and fill vacancies to maintain capacity; implement Direct-Action Organizing approaches in campaigns.
- Coordinate campaign activities with grassroots/patient coalitions, as well as regional and national ACS CAN teams; represent the organization professionally and build partnerships.
- Ensure compliance with IRS and ACS CAN legal and reporting requirements for electoral activity (Cancer Votes) and follow all organization policies.
- Attract and develop volunteers; strengthen grassroots capacity; train volunteers and ACS staff for engagement with elected officials and their staff; maintain volunteer data in Salesforce.
- Support cross-functional collaboration with American Cancer Society regional staff, coalitions, and partners to align and amplify campaigns.
- Drive volunteer fundraising in the assigned state(s); support fundraising activities and events consistent with guidelines; participate in ACS CAN fundraising programs as directed.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years of relevant work experience.
- Political issues or campaign organizing experience strongly preferred.
- Experience attracting, developing, and engaging volunteers preferred.
- Fundraising experience is a plus.
