Job title: Grants Accounting Manager

About the Role The Grants Accounting Manager provides oversight and administration of assigned programs at Youngstown State University, supervising staff and ensuring financial accuracy, compliance with GAAP and university procedures, and coordination of grants, study abroad funds, and endowments.

What You'll Do

  • Provide general oversight and administration of assigned programs and initiatives, including supervision of staff; assign/review work; train new employees; manage leave; interview candidates; evaluate performance; respond to grievances; contribute to development of unit policies.
  • Review/approve data for entry to accounting ledgers; ensure GAAP conformity; interpret accounting pronouncements and regulatory publications; document guidelines; recommend implementation.
  • Prepare/review complex journal entries; participate in year-end closing and financial statements for audit; perform/review audits; prepare/reviews financial, statutory, and management reports.
  • Oversee restricted gift funds, federal/state financial aid grants/loans, endowments; prepare Banner reports for Direct Loan reconciliations; manage draws, reconciliations, fund returns; respond to audits.
  • Prepare Controller’s portion of FISAP; manage study abroad functions including account setup, budgeting, journal processing, reconciliation, reporting, compliance, and fund close-out; coordinate with Faculty Led Study Abroad team.
  • Ensure compliance with gift/endowment terms and donor guidelines; provide customer service and financial technical support; serve as liaison to internal/external constituents; primary contact for the YSU Foundation.
  • Assist Grants Accounting with time-and-effort reporting, supplemental pay tracking, monthly budget updates for non-grant funds; identify and resolve accounting issues; review procedures and implement improvements.
  • Serve as backup to Controller’s Office; research and recommend policy/procedure changes; plan strategically; manage daily tasks; design/train documentation; analyze data and prepare reports for leadership.
  • Lead complex projects with implementation plans; communicate with supervisor and staff; maintain records; prepare data for supervisory review; prepare for and attend events; stay updated on developments; participate in staff development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Knowledge of policy administration, process improvement, supervisory techniques, and university policies and procedures; proficiency in office practices and project management.
  • Skills in use of office equipment, typing/data entry, computer operation, and relevant software.
  • Ability to analyze problems with multiple variables, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions, and determine material and equipment needs.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills; ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders; experience with budgets, grants, and financial reporting.
  • Familiarity with Banner and financial reporting processes and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to supervise staff and student employees; ability to work with cross-functional teams; willingness to train and develop others.
