General Manager

We are excited to add a new team member to the leadership team. We are looking for an experienced General Manager to lead asphalt and concrete road construction operations.

You will hold full P&L responsibility and oversee estimating, field operations, and project delivery across a multi-million-dollar annual operation serving public infrastructure clients throughout west-central Ohio.

You will work directly with ownership and senior leadership, and you will be the primary point of contact for inspectors, owners, and public agency customers.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands the work from the bid to the closeout and can build and grow a strong team in a union environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Estimating and Business Development

• Lead all estimating for A&B Asphalt, including bid preparation for approximately 50 bids annually

• Pursue work across counties in our 30-mile service radius around Springfield, Ohio, including Clark, Champaign, Madison, and parts of Greene and Miami counties

• Build relationships with municipal, county, township, and ODOT owners and their representatives

• Manage the full bid process, from takeoffs and pricing through submittal and award

• Field Operations and Project Management

• Oversee all asphalt paving and concrete construction field operations

• Direct project setup and closeout, including scheduling, sequencing, and coordinating materials and equipment to job sites

• Solve operational problems quickly and keep projects on schedule and within budget

• Manage equipment and material orders and track deliveries

• Support trucking and logistics as needed, with the superintendent and paving foreman handling day-to-day execution

• Financial Leadership

• Own the P&L and bottom-line results for the division

• Discuss future equipment needs and replacement with shop and ownership

• Monitor job cost performance and take corrective action when needed

• People Leadership

• Lead, hire, interview, develop, and when necessary, discipline and terminate team members

• Supervise the superintendent and paving foreman, and provide leadership to a field team of approximately 30 employees

• Build a culture of safety, accountability, and professionalism

• Manage labor relations and work within the terms of collective bargaining agreements

• Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with Safety, HR, Quality Control, and our asphalt plant operations

• Represent the company in industry associations such as the Ohio Contractors Association (OCA) as needed

• Work closely with ownership and senior leaders on company strategy and growth

Qualifications

• Required

• 5+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, with at least 3 years in management or leadership role over asphalt paving and/or concrete operations

• Demonstrated experience preparing competitive bids and estimates for public works projects

• Strong knowledge of project scheduling, job costing, and P&L management

• Proven ability to lead and develop field supervisors and crews, including in a unionized workforce

• Working knowledge of ODOT and local municipal specifications and requirements

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact confidently with inspectors, owners, and senior leadership

• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites and the asphalt plant as needed

• Preferred

• Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience

• Experience with HCSS (HeavyBid, HeavyJob), Workday, Procore, Tenna, and Fleet Watcher

• OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety training

• Experience with ODOT prequalification and public agency contracting

• Familiarity with industry associations such as the OCA

• Comfort using AI tools to support estimating, reporting, and day-to-day productivity
