About the Role North Central College seeks a General Maintenance/Kitchen and HVAC Assistant Laborer to help ensure assigned buildings and their plumbing, furnishings, mechanical and electrical systems are functional on a continuous basis, while maintaining a safe environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. This on-site role supports Facilities Planning and Operations by performing preventive maintenance, routine repairs, and, as needed, small-scale renovations under direction from the Supervisor. What You'll Do
- Inspect exterior and interior areas of assigned buildings regularly; identify, prioritize, and perform or report maintenance tasks; promptly report safety and security concerns.
- Maintain regular communication with the supervisor, department support staff, and assignment board to ensure timely completion of activities and report completion.
- Service, adjust, repair, replace building components and systems; troubleshoot problems; report more extensive work needed to supervisor or contractors.
- Service and repair kitchen/dining equipment including dishwashers; perform preventative maintenance on refrigeration systems; maintain lighting systems in Cage and Kaufman Kitchen, Dining and Serving areas; service RTUs, exhaust fans, air filters, and air handlers.
- Maintain building access/egress areas (sidewalks, stairways) in serviceable condition; remove debris, snow and ice as needed.
- Carry out projects involving installations, renovations or remodeling as directed by the supervisor, individually or as part of a team.
- Coordinate activities with building users and contractors to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption.
- May be assigned to temporarily work at other locations to substitute for or supplement personnel during times of heavy workload.
- Perform other related duties and tasks as appropriately assigned.
- Design and fabricate building components and furnishings; install/repair exterior building appurtenances such as fences and railings; move equipment and supplies; open (unlock) and secure (lock) buildings; travel to vendors for materials. What We're Looking For
- Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written) to receive assignments, understand procedures, and document work.
- Basic mathematical skills for estimates and calculations.
- Ability to interpret drawings and schematics representing electrical, mechanical, architectural and structural systems.
- Ability to transport and use materials and equipment safely, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working from ladders or scaffolds.
- Capable of performing a variety of building maintenance tasks across electrical, mechanical (HVAC), plumbing, carpentry, masonry and painting.
- Willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather and to work long hours as needed.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimal interference to building operations.
- Ability to relate positively to a variety of building users.
- Quick grasp of the College organization and operation to contribute positively.
- Ability to use power tools safely and appropriately. Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $27 - $29 per hour (USD). This is a full-time position.
