About the Role The General Maintenance I staff member is responsible for maintaining the functionality and upkeep of assigned buildings, including plumbing, electrical, mechanical systems, and furnishings. This position ensures all facilities operate smoothly and safely, providing a secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors of the College. What You'll Do
- Inspect the exterior and interior areas of assigned buildings on a regular basis, identify, prioritize and perform or report maintenance activities, and promptly report safety and security concerns.
- Maintain regular contact with sources of work assignments (supervisor, assignment board, RT Tracker) to ensure timely completion of activities and promptly report completion.
- Service, adjust, repair, or replace building components, systems and furnishings based on needs, work orders, or schedules; troubleshoot equipment, repair electrical fixtures/wiring, replace bulbs, repair walls/doors/windows, repair washroom fixtures, service HVAC, refrigeration and fire protection systems, seal leaks; report more extensive work to supervisor.
- Maintain building access/egress areas (sidewalks, stairways) clean and safe by removing debris, snow and ice.
- Carry out projects involving installations, renovations or remodeling as directed; work individually or as part of a team.
- Coordinate activities with building users and contractors to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption.
- May be assigned to temporarily work with other departmental units to substitute for personnel or during heavy workload.
- Install building components and furnishings such as shelving and cabinets.
- Install and repair exterior building appurtenances such as fences and railings.
- Repair door hardware, prepare and replace locks (including cores) and make keys.
- Setup rooms for particular functions by moving and arranging furniture and accessories, including chairs, tables, lecterns, bins, stages, tents and AV equipment, and restore space after events.
- Move or assist in moving equipment and supplies to/from storage or between locations.
- Travel to vendors to pick up materials and supplies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned. What We're Looking For
- Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written) to receive assignments, follow procedures, prepare requests, and record work.
- Basic computer skills including online time cards, trainings, and RT Tracker work orders.
- Ability to safely transport and use materials and equipment (up to 75 pounds) and work safely from ladders, scaffolds and elevated positions.
- Ability to perform a variety of building maintenance tasks involving electrical, mechanical (including HVAC), plumbing, carpentry, masonry and painting.
- Ability to move/setup event requests and move items to storage, sometimes on short notice.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and to work long hours as needed.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimal interference to building operations.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods for various surfaces and equipment in buildings.
- Ability to discern when building systems are not working and take appropriate action or notify supervisor.
- Ability to communicate with a variety of people representing building users.
- Ability to quickly grasp knowledge of College organization and operations.
- Ability to safely use power tools.

- Salary range: $20 - $25 per hour (USD).
