About this role
Surgo Health is building the Behavioral Intelligence layer for healthcare — revealing why people behave as they do, predicting what they will do next, and helping organizations make the decisions that change outcomes.
A Public Benefit Corporation grounded in two decades of global health experience, Surgo generates foundational behavioral data that reveals the unseen why and builds the AI products that power decision-grade insights at population scale — equipping healthcare organizations, funders, and public agencies to act on what actually shapes health outcomes: people's beliefs, motivations, and barriers.
Backed by 40+ peer-reviewed publications and trusted by partners including the Gates Foundation, J&J, Takeda, Pivotal Ventures, and the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Surgo is building a future where healthcare organizations don't just understand human behavior, but anticipate it.
Role Summary
We are looking for a Full-Stack Engineer to join the R&D Engineering team building Derin, our AI-powered interview platform. Derin runs conversational, LLM-led interviews with thousands of participants and turns them into insight that our clients and researchers use to ultimately improve patients' outcomes.
You will own features end to end across our stack: polished, fast, accessible interfaces in TypeScript and React (the client dashboard, the participant-facing survey app and our internal admin tools), and the APIs and database behind them, in TypeScript and Python. You will work in a small, senior team where what you build reaches clients within days.
What you’ll achieve:
- Work AI-first: use AI agents (Claude Code, Cursor and others) throughout your day to design, build, debug and optimize, and help the team keep raising the bar on AI-assisted engineering
- Build and evolve Derin's client-facing results dashboard and participant web app in Next.js and React (TypeScript), from data visualizations and filters to multilingual survey experiences
- Design and implement the APIs behind them (NestJS, Prisma, PostgreSQL), and contribute to our Python services (FastAPI), including access control, exports and data-retention features
- Turn product requirements and designs into well-structured, reusable components in our shared design system
- Keep the product fast and reliable at scale: server-side rendering, caching, pagination and performance tuning on large datasets
- Own the quality of what you ship: automated tests, code reviews and observability
- Help run our release process (develop → stage → production), including hotfixes and dependency and security updates
- Build security and privacy into how we handle sensitive participant data, in a SOC 2 and HIPAA-compliant environment
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, researchers and backend/data engineers
- Contribute to shaping our engineering culture as we grow
About you:
- You have at least 3 years of professional experience building web applications with TypeScript
- You have strong, production experience with React and Next.js (App Router, server components/SSR)
- You have built and maintained backend APIs on a relational database, ideally PostgreSQL: in Node.js (NestJS or similar) and in Python (FastAPI or similar). TypeScript is your strongest language, and you are productive in Python too: you can read, change and ship code in our Python services
- You have hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure (required)
- You have built data-heavy interfaces: dashboards, charts (e.g. Recharts, D3), tables and complex filters
- You value testing (Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright, pytest or similar), code review and CI/CD
- Experience with a component library or design system (e.g. MUI) and with internationalization (i18n) is a plus
- Experience with LLM-powered features (chat interfaces, streaming responses, AI-generated content) is a strong plus
- You are AI-native: you use agentic tools such as Claude Code and Cursor every day to design architectures and diagrams, write and review code, debug and improve performance. You know how to set them up (context, rules, MCP servers, subagents) and when not to trust their output. Surgo is an AI-driven company that uses AI for almost everything we do, not only code, and our interview process asks you to show how you work with it
- You hold a University degree in Computer Science or a related field
- You are independent, proactive, and able to deliver features end to end with minimal supervision
- You are fluent in English, both written and spoken, and comfortable working remotely with substantial overlap with US Eastern and UK hours
Location: This is a Türkiye-based role (Istanbul). Surgo is headquartered in Washington, DC, with team members across the US, UK, Türkiye, Brazil and India.
