About this role

FP&A Lead

Location: Remote

Reporting Structure: CFO, Federico Lozano

Company Description

Seel is post-purchase AI infrastructure for ecommerce. Our embedded Return Assurance and Worry-Free Delivery products let shoppers buy peace of mind at checkout, while Seel underwrites the risk, manages refunds and reverse logistics, and recovers value through resale and refurbishment of returned goods. Seel also sells a Performance Dashboard analytics product to enterprise merchants. We serve thousands of merchants, from emerging DTC brands to multi-billion-dollar marketplaces, and we’re expanding into predictive, data-driven risk reduction for retailers.

Quick facts:

  • Series B, backed by Lightspeed and Foundation Capital
  • Post-purchase AI infrastructure category (Return Assurance, Worry-Free Delivery, Performance Dashboard)
  • Thousands of merchants, from emerging DTC brands to multi-billion-dollar marketplaces

Responsibilities

  • Seel is hiring an FP&A Lead to be the second finance seat at the company and the CFO’s direct partner on the numbers that drive the business. You will own Seel’s company-wide financial model end to end: planning, forecasting, variance analysis, and the financial narrative for our CEO, board, and investors. Because our revenue is built merchant by merchant, strong FP&A at Seel also means understanding unit and deal economics: you will support merchant-level pricing and underwriting analysis and make sure what we sign flows cleanly into the plan. This is a senior individual-contributor role with real ownership, and you will work fluently with Claude and other AI tools, including helping build Seel’s agentic AI workforce inside finance, to run the function faster and leaner than a traditional FP&A team.

  • Financial model and planning: Own Seel’s core driver-based 3-statement model outright: the annual budget, quarterly forecast cycles, and rolling reforecasts as protection-fee volume, take rate, and claims experience shift. You are the single point of accountability for what the model says.

  • Forecasting drivers: Build and maintain portfolio-level GMV forecasts, return-rate assumptions by category and vertical, and revenue-per-order sensitivities tied to Seel’s protection products, with a clear bridge from merchant pipeline to company plan.

  • Variance and driver analysis: Close the loop between actuals and plan monthly, explaining variances by driver (GMV, return rate, take rate, loss ratio, opex), not just by line item, and bringing the recommendation alongside the diagnosis.

  • Board and investor materials: Own the financial narrative in board materials, investor updates, and diligence. Build it, defend it, and answer the follow-up questions directly.

  • Unit economics and KPIs: Track and report the metrics unique to the business: loss ratio, claims frequency and severity, take rate by product line, recovery/liquidation yield on returned inventory, and cohort-level payback and retention.

  • Deal economics support: Partner with Sales and Risk/Underwriting on merchant deal models (GMV, AOV, return rates, category mix, loss-ratio assumptions), pressure-test pricing and take-rate proposals against plan, and join select merchant calls when the numbers need a finance voice.

  • Pricing analysis: Monitor performance of existing pricing tiers and run discount and merchant-economics analysis to inform pricing decisions as product and segment mix evolve.

  • Data and reporting infrastructure: Own the data layer that feeds the model: pull your own data from BigQuery and NetSuite, keep pipelines clean and auditable, and build the recurring reporting the company runs on.

  • Agentic AI workforce: Help build and manage Seel’s AI agent workforce inside finance, deploying Claude-based agents to run recurring reporting, scenario analysis, and variance write-ups, not just using AI as a personal productivity tool.

  • Accounting partnership: Work closely with Accounting on revenue recognition, deferred revenue, and claims reserve treatment so the model reflects GAAP reality, not just cash flow.

  • Is this you?

  • 7+ years in finance, including FP&A ownership at a high-growth startup; ecommerce, retail, marketplace, fintech, or insurtech experience strongly preferred.

  • Expert-level financial modeling: you can build and run a driver-based 3-statement model, lead budget and reforecast cycles, and defend every assumption.

  • Fluency with ecommerce economics: GMV, return rates, AOV, and category mix, and how they flow through both a merchant’s P&L and Seel’s.

  • Solid grounding in unit economics (contribution margin, cohort payback, LTV:CAC) and enough deal-modeling experience to pressure-test a merchant deal against plan.

  • A genuine interest in the mechanics of modeling, not just the strategic output. This role is hands-on with the model every day; there is no analyst underneath you.

  • Working knowledge of GAAP accounting (revenue recognition, accruals, deferred revenue, reserves) sufficient to partner effectively with Accounting. You do not need to close the books, but you need to understand how they are closed.

  • Demonstrated, hands-on fluency with Claude or comparable AI tools for modeling, analysis, and reporting workflows; ideally experience standing up AI agents to own pieces of a finance workflow, not just personal use.

  • Comfort with ambiguity and imperfect data. Startup FP&A means building the plane while flying it.

  • Sharp, structured communicator who can present model outputs and recommendations to a CFO, a CEO, and a board without hand-holding.

  • Advanced Excel/Google Sheets and working SQL; BI tool experience (Looker, Mode, or similar) is a plus.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with NetSuite or a comparable ERP, and with BigQuery or a similar warehouse.

  • Exposure to insurance-adjacent metrics such as loss ratio, claims frequency and severity, and reserves, or to marketplace and platform unit economics.

  • Prior experience as an early finance hire at a company scaling through a growth round, where the FP&A function was still being built.

  • Exposure to merchant-facing pricing, packaging, or deal structuring in a product or ecommerce business.

  • Perks

  • 170K-200K + bonus

  • Equity in a highly successful Series B startup with exceptional customer retention

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • You’ll work closely with the CFO, CEO, and leadership team on the model, the plan, and the metrics that drive the business, with real ownership over FP&A and how an agentic AI workforce reshapes finance at Seel.
