About the Role An entry-level Fleet Maintenance Trainee who works under direct supervision to assist in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of SORTA transit buses and related fleet equipment. This role participates in SORTA's Fleet Maintenance Training Program to develop the technical knowledge and hands-on skills needed for a career in fleet maintenance.

What You'll Do

• Follow SORTA maintenance procedures and shop standards based on oral or written instructions.
• Assist in the inspection, servicing, and repair of SORTA transit buses, support vehicles, and related fleet equipment.
• Develop proficiency diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues while under direct supervision.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance such as fluid checks, filter replacement, lubrication, and general inspections.
• Support major repair activities under supervision and road-test vehicles as directed.
• Safely use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment as training progresses.
• Participate in classroom, hands-on, manufacturer-led, and on-the-job training sessions as part of the Fleet Maintenance Training Program.
• Accurately complete required documentation including work orders, labor time entries, parts records, and training assessments in SORTA’s fleet management system.
• Clean, inspect, and maintain hand tools, power tools, and work areas per SORTA shop standards; work in indoor and outdoor environments.
• Attend shift meetings, safety briefings, and required departmental meetings; model exemplary internal and external customer service.
• Work safely in accordance with SORTA safety rules and OSHA regulations; perform other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Exam).
• Minimum of two (2) years of technical automotive or mechanical experience, or equivalent related experience. Experience with diesel engines, heavy equipment, or transit vehicles is preferred.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and interest in developing fleet maintenance skills.
• Valid Driver’s License; Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements required upon completion of probation.
• Valid or ability to obtain U.S. EPA Section 608/609 Air Conditioning Certification (Clean Air Act, 1990) and OSHA Industrial Forklift Operator Certification upon completion of probation.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions in English; distinguish colors; and prepare simple sketches and parts lists.
• Ability to work as part of a team in a safety-critical environment; follow safety rules and perform physically demanding tasks (lifting up to 100 pounds, with assist for heavier loads).
• Must meet applicable SORTA safety, drug/alcohol testing, DOT physical, and medical requirements; complete required written, hands-on, and performance-based assessments as part of the Fleet Maintenance Training Program.

Nice to Have

• Experience with diesel engines, heavy equipment, or transit vehicles is preferred.
