About this role

Under the general direction of the Finance Director, the Finance Manager is responsible for all accounting functions on board the ship. The position will also directly supervise paraprofessional staff: Payables Accountant, Receivables Accountant, and Crew Banker positions.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining accurate and timely financial records, the issuance of financial reports to stakeholders, and other financial duties as assigned. You will also act as an adviser on items such as: making recommendations on proper accounting procedures and preparation and interpretation of financial analysis.

What you will contribute

  • Oversee all accounting functions making recommendations to the Finance Director as to proper accounting procedures
  • Monitor, design and/or implement adequate internal control systems
  • Maintain accounting records for financial reporting, preparation of financial reports (monthly and/or as requested) and assistance in the analysis of financial data
  • Continually seek and make recommendations on new and innovative ways to properly meet the accounting needs on board
  • Monitor multi-currency bank accounts
  • Work with local banking institutions in country to ensure adequate working capital levels are maintained

For This Role, You Will Need

  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding program
  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or equivalent
  • Experience as an accountant with at least 2 years in supervising other accountants
  • An understanding of accounting software, and broad understanding of accounting principles and procedures
  • Understand and be able to work freely in a multi-currency environment
  • Excellent written/verbal communications and interpersonal skills
  • Computer proficiency with emphasis on Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • International Driver’s License required (arrange prior to travel, if necessary)
  • Supportive of Mercy Ships mission and vision, and committed to its core values
  • Understand and apply servant leadership, work collaboratively with integrity and demonstrate accountability
  • Able to live in and contribute to community life, requiring stable and healthy interpersonal skills
  • Background/Criminal record check required
