Field Specialist - Forestry (Cheshire County)

About the Role UNH Extension seeks a Full Time Field Specialist in Cheshire County to deliver extension forest resources education and assistance to landowners, citizens, natural resource professionals, forest industry, and organizations. This role supports county-based programming and delivers the U.S. Forest Service's Forest Stewardship Program, with occasional night and weekend duties. What You'll Do

• Conduct woodlot visits with landowners, providing technical and educational advice on forest stewardship, including timber products, wildlife habitat, best management practices for water resource protection and erosion control, invasive species, recreation, forest resiliency, and protection of threatened and endangered species.
• Provide educational programs and technical assistance on topics including forest management, wildlife, urban and community forestry, maple syrup production, tree insects and diseases, forest carbon programs, forest products marketing, selling timber, water resources, wetlands, and more as relates to landowner objectives.
• Manage county-owned lands with guidance from the county administrator and commissioners through timber sales, stewardship plans, marketing information and assistance, cost-sharing, and other revenue-generating opportunities.
• Use mass media, social networking, computer technology, and demonstration areas to promote public awareness of the benefits and uses of local forests for products, wildlife habitat, water resources, erosion control, tourism, and quality of life.
• Support programs for youth in forestry, wildlife, and related areas (e.g., through schools, 4-H, Project Learning Tree, and other outlets).
• Recruit, support, and use natural resource volunteers and citizen scientists (e.g., NH Coverts Cooperators, NH Natural Resources Stewards, Nature Groupie, and NH Tree Farm Program).
• Market UNH Cooperative Extension in cooperation with the marketing and communications team and co-workers.
• Ensure programmatic involvement of underserved and underrepresented audiences and that all educational programming is designed and conducted in full accordance with civil rights, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Affirmative Action (AA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) policies and procedures.
• Engage County Extension Advisory Council members by keeping them informed and seeking guidance to meet county needs.
• Perform other responsibilities to meet clientele, County Extension Advisory Council, funders, and key partners such as the NH Division of Forests and Lands, NH Fish and Game Department, US Forest Service, and USDA NRCS; seek external funding and/or cost recovery as appropriate.
• When determined appropriate with supervisor and Extension administration, serve as the county office administrator (COA) of the Cheshire County Extension office, developing and maintaining relationships with county administrators, department heads, commissioners, and delegation members; responsible for facility and equipment management, office budget management, and supervision of administrative staff. COA duties usually account for about 20% of time.
• Serve on other internal Extension committees as requested.
• For statewide programming, assist with and conduct regional and statewide programming consistent with the specialist's expertise; participate in the design and delivery of programs funded by grants and gifts. What We're Looking For
• Master’s degree in forestry, wildlife, or a closely related field from an accredited institution; or a bachelor’s degree in forestry, wildlife, or related field from an accredited institution with three years of experience may be considered.
• Strong candidate with forestry/wildlife background and ability to work independently and with diverse stakeholders; willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
• Experience with extension, natural resources programming, and field-based outreach to landowners; excellent communication and program development skills. Nice to Have
• Experience coordinating or working with volunteers or partner programs (e.g., NH Coverts, NH Tree Farm, Nature Groupie).
• Demonstrated ability to engage underserved or diverse audiences and work in multidisciplinary teams.
