Job title: Field Service Engineer (Automation)
About the Role Sartorius is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial Field Service Engineer based remotely in the Chicago, IL area to support cutting-edge Ambr system equipment. The role involves managing installations and commissioning, calibration, and preventative maintenance across a range of systems, acting as a trusted partner for customers.
What You'll Do
- Perform installation & commissioning, calibration, preventative maintenance and break-fix repairs across a range of systems.
- Maintain fault-finding data and feed product performance data to customers and internal Sartorius teams; develop deep product knowledge.
- Complete in-house service activities as needed (Delaware office).
- Follow service procedures to keep customer information and product software/configuration up to date.
- Keep accurate records of time, expenses and work performed.
- Make independent decisions regarding repairs based on SLAs and customer contracts.
- Collaborate with teams to escalate system issues to Product Support Engineers, Customer Support Engineers and the Hardware Resource Coordinator.
- Travel up to ~80% (primarily within assigned territory).
What We're Looking For
- Associate degree in mechanical/electrical engineering or equivalent military or trade school certificates in electronics/electrical technology; formal training in mechanical/electrical hardware setup and configuration. Field or building services engineering experience acceptable in lieu.
- 2+ years' experience in commissioning/testing or field service/support in high-tech engineering/manufacturing; capital equipment preferred.
- Valid driver's license and passport (or ability to obtain).
- Experience with electrical, mechanical & I/O fault-finding at system and component level.
- Experience with automation/robotics is a huge plus.
- Understanding of automatic mechanisms and electrical control systems.
- Proficiency measuring AC/DC voltages; hands-on robotics, motors, conveyors, I/O modules, optical readers, pneumatics and electromechanical assemblies.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and customer training skills; familiarity with MS Office.
- Knowledge of mechanical/electrical schematics; software/firmware installation and testing; calibration of control systems.
- Knowledge of clean room protocols, GMP environments; mammalian and microbial cell culture knowledge; bioreactors.
- Experience configuring PCs and Windows OS; ability to work in a team and establish customer relationships.

Nice to Have
- Experience with automated systems such as robotics; automated equipment in pharmaceutical/biotechnology.
- ISO 9001:2008, GMP/GDP knowledge.
- Prior experience in ISO/GMP environments preferred.
- Ability to identify documentation/tools/equipment needs and proactively assist customers.
