Field Representative, Education Team

About the Role

SEIU Local 1021 Field Representative for the Education Team based in East Bay, CA is a field-oriented organizing role focused on developing worksite leadership, handling grievances and campaigns, recruiting members, and supporting union contracts and political action. This position requires events in the evenings and on weekends and is not a traditional 9-to-5 job. What You'll Do

• Recruitment: work with union leadership and stewards to recruit new members and maintain regular one-on-one contact with members.

• Leadership Development: build and sustain worksite leadership structures, training and supporting stewards and leaders; form stewards' councils and issue committees.

• Communication: maintain regular communication with workers through visits, flyers, newsletters, calls, mailings, postings, and meetings; respond to messages promptly.

• Representation: interpret collective bargaining agreements and other laws; advocate and handle grievances, appeals, hearings, and other formal matters; assist attorneys and prepare witnesses/exhibits; pursue informal resolutions when possible.

• Collective Bargaining: serve as chief or backup negotiator; conduct bargaining and salary surveys and other research to strengthen negotiating position.

• Issue Campaigns: develop and implement industry strategies; identify issues and craft strategies including petitions, group grievances, work actions, media events, and legal actions.

• Legislative and Electoral Campaigns: recruit members for lobbying, phone banking, letter-writing, canvassing and other activities.

• Administration: maintain a calendar and accurate records of activities, visits and appointments; keep detailed activity reports. What We're Looking For

• Experience in union organizing and representation; experience negotiating contracts is highly desirable but not required.

• Must have experience in county and governmental areas; related experience or steward/rank-and-file experience will be considered.

• Ability to work as part of a team; strong oral and written communication; analytical skills for interpreting contract language and grievances; ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision; well organized and self-motivated.

• Salary range: $76,054.81 – $124,917.00 per year (USD).
