Job Summary

  • The Fiber Field Service Engineer (FSE) is responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing, and emergency restoration of fiber optic network infrastructure. This includes both outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) environments, covering active and passive optical networks (FTTH, dark fiber, enterprise fiber, and backhaul links).
  • The ideal candidate combines technical expertise in fusion splicing and OTDR testing with strong field troubleshooting capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Installation & Splicing:

  • Perform precision fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, and fiber termination on core, distribution, and drop cables (singlemode and multimode).
  • Install, dress, and terminate fiber optic cables in fiber patch panels, splice enclosures, optical distribution frames (ODF), and customer premises equipment (CPE/ONT).
  • Route and secure optical fiber pathways in conduit systems, pole lines, risers, and underground manholes/handholes.

Testing & Commissioning:

  • Conduct end-to-end optical testing using OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer), LSPM (Light Source and Power Meter), and VFL (Visual Fault Locator).
  • Analyze OTDR trace files ($1310,text{nm}$, $1550,text{nm}$, $1625,text{nm}$) to quantify splice loss, connector reflectance, attenuation, and total link loss against defined SLA thresholds.
  • Document and submit clean, as-built test results and fiber mapping/matrix reports upon project completion.

Maintenance & Emergency Fault Restoration:

  • Respond to fiber cuts, degradation, and network outages within defined SLA turnaround times (on-call rotation required).
  • Utilize OTDR fault-location techniques to pinpoint fiber breaks or micro/macro-bends accurately.
  • Perform mid-span access and splice repairs on live or degraded cable runs with minimal downtime.

Site Inspection & Quality Control:

  • Conduct joint site surveys (JSS) and quality assurance audits on contractor/third-party fiber installations.
  • Ensure all installations comply with international fiber standards (ITU-T G.652/G.657, TIA/EIA-568) and local safety/regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of field tools, fusion splicers, cleavers, test kits, and safety gear (PPE).

Requirements

  • NCE, OND, BSc, or, HND with a minimum of 3 years experience.
