Farm Animal Team Leader Caretaker

About the Role The Long Island University College of Veterinary Medicine (LIU-CVM) invites applications for a full-time Farm Animal Team Leader Caretaker at the College’s new 60-acre beef cattle facility in Yaphank, NY. The role centers on daily livestock care, farm upkeep, and preparation for LIU-CVM laboratories, with cross-training to cover weekends and holidays.

What You'll Do

• Provide daily care of livestock, monitor health and document illnesses or incidents; assist with emergencies affecting the animals.
• Manage feed and water, maintain bedding inventory, and track orders to ensure uninterrupted supply; maintain records and identify livestock.
• Keep barns, stalls, fences, gates, pens, and related infrastructure clean, orderly, and in good repair; ensure proper confinement and animal safety.
• Prepare for student activities, courses and labs; assist with logistics, supervision, record-keeping, and sample handling; record animal use.
• Operate farm vehicles, implements, and equipment; assist with weed and brush control and sanitation of LIU equipment and transport vehicles.
• Cross-train with the Commack teaching farm to provide weekend/holiday coverage and support for colleagues; supervise and coordinate student workers and guests as directed.
• Maintain inventory for cadavers used for instructional purposes; prepare and manage materials for upcoming lab sessions; assist with breeding- and neonatal-related tasks as directed.
• Track LIU Facilities work orders and coordinate completion; assist with transporting animals to/from the farm as needed.

What We're Looking For

• Self-directed, innovative, and motivated individual who can work independently at a remote site with sound judgement and minimal supervision.
• Experience in large animal care (cattle) and daily farm operations; ability to follow SOPs, policies, and safety procedures; strong record-keeping and inventory skills.
• Flexibility to start early (generally 7am) with some evenings, weekends, and holidays; willingness to work across two teaching farm facilities (Yaphank and Commack).
• Ability to plan and maintain schedules, coordinate with students and staff, and assist in teaching labs and student activities; comfort with assisting in breeding-related tasks if directed.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary range: $70,001-$75,000 per year; FLSA status: Exempt.
• This is a full-time position with opportunities to engage in LIU-CVM educational and service activities as part of the teaching farm program.
