Job description
Join South-East Monash Legal Service (SMLS) to provide trauma-informed legal support to people experiencing family violence and criminal legal issues. You will work with victim survivors of family violence and people facing minor criminal or regulatory matters who may otherwise be unrepresented. You will also work closely with Victoria Legal Aid, court and community partners and supervised student social workers to support integrated, person-centred client outcomes.
The role
The successful applicant may be appointed as either Family Violence and Crime Lawyer or Senior Family Violence and Crime Lawyer.
At Lawyer level, you will manage duty-lawyer, advice, casework and advocacy matters of routine to moderate complexity within established procedures, professional supervision and escalation arrangements.
At Senior Lawyer level, you will independently manage complex and high-risk matters and contribute to mentoring, legal-practice quality, service development, stakeholder engagement and systemic advocacy.
About you
You will have:
- Eligibility to hold, or current holding of, an unrestricted Victorian practising certificate
- Relevant experience providing legal information, advice, casework, representation and/or court advocacy
- Strong legal research, drafting, file-management, communication and organisational skills
- The ability to work sensitively and effectively with people experiencing trauma, family violence, distress, disadvantage or criminal legal issues
- Sound professional judgment, including the ability to identify risk and seek advice or escalate matters when required
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity and inclusion
Experience in family violence, intervention orders, criminal law, duty-lawyer services or Magistrates’ Court advocacy will be highly regarded.
Applicants seeking appointment at Senior Lawyer level should also demonstrate substantial relevant experience and the ability to manage complex matters independently, mentor or guide others, and contribute to practice quality or program development.
