About this role
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Oversees the supervision of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, boiler systems and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) contractors; plans, organizes, and manages projects; includes project planning and work analysis involving job site inspection.
Reviews work orders and blueprints or drawings; inspects site and consults with stakeholders; determines best method to complete a project; estimates amount of materials and equipment needed to complete a project; prepares cost estimates; arranges for materials at the job site.
Works as a departmental liaison for offering technical support and review of MEP operation and best practices.
Assists in the review of construction documents prepared by others. Assists with project oversight and compliance with Engineering Construction standards and related master planning efforts to support and implement university infrastructure and systems.
Maintains files, invoices, purchase orders, quotes, and records and required documentation to reflect department activity; demonstrate proficiency in using computer maintenance management systems to enter service requests.
Provides oversight and strategic direction for multiple programs, initiatives, or objectives, including supervision of managers. Establishes priorities and goals for assigned areas; develops staffing plans; approves work plans developed by lower-level managers; develops and implements unit-wide policies and procedures.
Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures for assigned areas. Interprets and adapts broader organizational policies to meet the specific needs of the department.
Participates directly in the strategic planning process for the department. Develops long-range plans, goals, and objectives for assigned areas aligned with broader organizational strategy.
Directs the overall planning, implementation, and evaluation of multiple program areas or a major department/division function with significant operational complexity and resource requirements.
Provides general oversight and administration of any assigned program, initiative, or objective, including supervision of staff. Assigns and reviews work; establishes timeframes for the completion of assigned tasks; trains and orients new employees; approves/disapproves requests for paid leaves; interviews candidates for employment and makes recommendations for hire; evaluates employee work performance; receives and responds to grievances; helps with the development of unit work procedures and policies.
Researches and makes recommendations to supervisor regarding assigned area’s policies and procedures as it relates to completion of work and/or provision of services; administers regulations and/or policies.
Prepares reports and other information/documentation to assist the supervisor in strategic planning of the assigned area.??
Manages daily tasks related to one or more assigned components of a department’s/division’s overall programs and/or services.??
Designs and delivers training materials and/or other supporting documentation necessary for the operation of the assigned area.
Analyzes complex data sets and prepares comprehensive reports with recommendations for leadership.
Researches and recommends process improvements for departmental operations on a routine or regular basis. Evaluates effectiveness and recommends enhancements of services.
Participates and/or leads complex projects, including implementation plans, timelines, and resource requirements.
Coordinates daily tasks related to one or more assigned components of overall programs and/or services as assigned.
Regularly communicates with supervisor and other staff, including student workers, as required or needed in the completion of daily tasks in support of overall goals and objectives.
Prepares and maintains accurate records of daily tasks in accordance with applicable policies and procedures and assures timely communication with supervisor, staff, and students where appropriate.
Gathers data and prepares reports and other information/documentation for supervisory review related to programs and/or services, or one or more assigned components.
Prepares for and attends events.
Remains informed of current developments and procedures pertinent to duties; participates in staff development activities; attends meetings, conferences, and other events.
Other Functions and Responsibilities
Trains new hires.
Performs other duties as assigned and/or required that are within the level of responsibility for this classification at the discretion of the supervisor.
Equipment Operated: Computer and all other standard office equipment, boom and scissor lifts, digital multimeters, equipment and tools of the MEP trades.
Work Schedule: Typically, Monday through Friday. May involve work outside of normal business hours including evenings and weekends. Responds to emergencies after hours.

Supervision Exercised: Supervision is exercised over staff and student employees.
Reports to: Director, Facilities Engineering
Required Certifications, Training, and/or Licensures: EPA Section 608Universal Technician; Backflow Prevention Testing Certification; Ohio State Stationary Engineer’s License or Equivalent.
Sponsorship and/or Work Authorization Status: This position is not eligible for sponsorship.

Minimum Qualifications
- At least a bachelor’s degree and at least four years of related experience in MEP operations, repair, and construction; OR at least an associate degree and six years of related experience in MEP operations, repair, and construction; OR at least a high school diploma or GED and at least eight years of related experience in MEP operations, repair, and construction.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior supervisory experience. EPA 608 Certification. Experience with high pressure steam boiler and distribution. Experience with commercial HVAC systems. Experience in a union environment.
