Pay Range: The previously determined pay range for this position is $20.91 - 39.11 / Hourly Wage. Pay is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.

The Equipment Service Supervisor provides operational & supervisory oversight for equipment services within Perioperative area. The position directly supervises Equipment Service Specialists & is responsible for equipment availability, maintenance, inventory, regulatory compliance, & operational readiness. The Supervisor coordinates preventive maintenance, repairs, vendor services, equipment installations, & related projects; monitors equipment expenditures & inventory; & ensures required documentation & records are maintained. Will conduct proactive rounding to identify equipment, safety, environmental, inventory, & operational concerns & ensures timely follow-up & resolution. The position supports continuous regulatory and accreditation readiness & serves as the department's Medical Laser Safety Officer. The Supervisor collaborates with Clinical Engineering, Facilities Management, Sterile Processing, Information Technology, vendors, & Perioperative leadership to support operations.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Equipment Maintenance
- Maintains Perioperative Services equipment, including records of location, usage, maintenance, and inventory.
- Directly supervises Equipment Service Specialists, including daily assignments, work prioritization, performance management, coaching, and staff development.
- Assists with performance evaluations and addresses performance concerns in accordance with organizational policies.
- Provides education and training to ensure staff competency in equipment operation, troubleshooting, safety, and required processes.
- Ensures appropriate staffing coverage and accountability for completion of assigned work.
- Inspect equipment for needed repairs and coordinate service or shipment to vendors as necessary.
- Participate in supply, equipment, and capital inventory activities as requested.
- Maintain records of supplies and equipment loaned to or borrowed from other areas within the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System and coordinate retrieval or return as needed.
- Maintain records of supplies and equipment received from external organizations and vendors.
- Remove reusable equipment from procedural rooms and return it to the Equipment Room for cleaning, inspection, and storage.
- Replace bulbs and perform minor maintenance on equipment as needed.
- Collaborate with Clinical Engineering to coordinate equipment repairs and service calls with appropriate vendors.
- Inspect and maintain operating room table, lights, booms and recording equipment functionality.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and repair services with outside vendors.
- Establish and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for equipment.
- Track and monitor monthly equipment repair expenditures and related expenses.
Supervision of Equipment Specialists
- Provides leadership, training, and performance management for Equipment Specialists.
- Conduct annual performance evaluations.
- Assign and prioritize daily responsibilities and projects.
- Address performance concerns and initiate disciplinary actions when appropriate.
- Coordinate and facilitate equipment-related education.
- Train staff on the proper operation and basic troubleshooting of equipment.
Medical Supply and Equipment Management
- Orders and maintains inventory of medical supplies, equipment, and instruments as needed.
- Orders medical gas cylinders and other designated supplies.
- Orders replacement instruments and equipment components as needed.
- Collaborate with Sterile Processing and leadership to determine appropriate inventory levels and supply needs.
- Monitor inventory and coordinate replenishment to ensure operational readiness.
Project Coordination
- Coordinates projects that support the efficiency, functionality, safety, and appearance of Surgical Services areas.
- Initiate work requests and equipment installation requests.
- Collaborate with project managers, Facilities Management, Clinical Engineering, and Operating Room leadership to plan and coordinate project logistics.
- Coordinate major equipment installations, renovations, and upgrades, including surgical lights, booms, and other clinical equipment.
- Monitor project progress and communicate updates to stakeholders.
Medical Laser Safety Officer
- Serves as the department's Medical Laser Safety Officer and promotes safe laser use in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborates with leadership to develop and maintain laser safety policies and procedures.
- Develops and maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all laser systems used within the department.
- Coordinates laser safety education and training for staff.
- Conducts laser safety audits and ensure required documentation is maintained.
- Serves as the departmental liaison to the hospital's Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and participates in laser safety initiatives as needed.
IT and Technology Support
- Assists with the implementation and coordination of technology projects as needed.
- Submits work orders and project requests for data, power, and telecommunications infrastructure.
- Coordinates with Information Technology staff to facilitate software installations, server requests, and system implementations.
- Assists with implementation of new technologies, including IP phones, tracking boards, equipment tracking systems, and other software applications.
- Serves as a departmental resource for technology-related projects and equipment integration.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assists with monitoring temperature-controlled equipment, including refrigerators and freezers used for critical supplies and medications.
- Occasionally responds to after-hours calls and provide supports during equipment-related emergencies when available.
- Performs other duties as assigned by department managers and directors.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in mechanical repair of equipment to be serviced.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of mechanical and electrical functioning of machinery serviced by the positions to be supervised.
- Ability to supervise.
- Ability to understand electrical and mechanical schematics.
- Ability to work without continuous technical supervision.
